Admission Requirements

Course and Degree Requirements

• Degree: Minimum of 90 undergraduate credits from an accredited U.S. college or university (any discipline)
  • All required courses need to be completed before July 15th prior to matriculation
• Required Courses
  • General Biology – 8 semester hours (Embryology and Genetics recommended)
  • General Chemistry with Lab – 8 credits
  • Organic Chemistry with Lab – 8 credits (also accept a 4 term sequence of chemistry that includes Biochemistry)
  • General Physics with lab – 8 credits
  • Mathematics – 6 credits (may include 1 course in Computer Science, Statistics coursework is highly desirable)
  • English – 6 credits
  • AFor AP or CLEP credit to meet a minimum requirement, college hour or unit credit for a course must appear on the applicant’s transcript.

GPA

• Minimum: No minimum
• Minimum grade of “C” on all required course
• To be eligible for participation in the Early Decision Program, a student:
  • Must be a legal resident of Alabama
  • Must be eligible for a Bachelor's degree by the time of matriculation
  • Should have a GPA of 3.6 or above
  • Should have average or above MCAT scores (total score of 30 with no sub-score less than 9)
• Average UASOM Matriculating Applicants GPA: 3.70‐3.73

Standardized Test

• Minimum scores: 24
• Scores from the September MCAT dates are the latest that will be considered
• A 2011 MCAT score is the earliest score considered for the 2014 entering class
• Average score of successful applicants: 29.2 ‐ 30.2

Interview

• When: Most Thursdays from mid-September to mid-March
• Sent via email and include instructions for scheduling your interview
  • Recommended to complete secondary application as soon as possible
• The interview day consists of:
  • Sign-in. Photo will be taken
  • Orientation to the day's activities
  • Each applicant meets individually with three Admissions Committee members for twenty-five minute interviews
  • Applicants meet with current medical students for lunch, discussion and a tour of our facilities
  • Campus tour of educational and clinical facilities
  • The interview day is usually completed by 2:30 p.m.
