Program Information

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD)
  • 4 years in length
    • Applicants with a PhD in biomedical/preclinical sciences may be eligible for a 3-year program.
  • The 164 members of the Class of 2013 include 90 men and 74 women.
    • 13 (8 percent) African and African American; 57 (35 percent) Asian; 11 (7 percent) Hispanic; 2 (1 percent) Native American or Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander; and 74 (45 percent) White.

Admission Requirements

Course and Degree Requirements

  • Degree: Minimum of 90 hours of college credit
  • Two semesters of the following coursework are required (lecture and lab):
      • Biology,
      • Physics,
      • Inorganic Chemistry,
      • Organic Chemistry.
  • Two semesters of the following coursework are recommended: English, Humanities, Psychology, Statistics.
  • A bachelor’s degree is not required, it is expected.

GPA

  • GPA for the Class of 2013 is 3.74 overall and 3.69 in the sciences.

MCAT

  • Students are encouraged to take the MCAT exam or any retests no later than June of the application year.
  • Average scores on the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) for the class are 12.16 in the biological sciences,11.89 in the physical sciences, and 10.52 in verbal skills.

Other Requirements

  • All applicants are required to have completed at least three years of course work at an accredited U.S. or Canadian college or university, through study at the undergraduate or graduate level or a combination of both degree levels.
  • Only applications for transfer into the third year of medical studies, based on hardship, are considered.
  • An applicant may request to defer matriculation for a year after acceptance of a Feinberg admission offer.

Interview

  • Date: Mid-September to mid-February.
  • It involves two half-hour sessions with faculty members to discuss about the candidate’s motivation, aptitudes, future goals, etc.
  • 15-20 minutes with an admissions dean or a faculty member.
  • During this interview, applicants: are asked questions about their interests and motivation to medicine, can add updates to their admissions files, and are also expected to ask the interviewer questions about the medical school.

Timeline

  • January, April, May, June 2009 -Preferred months to sit for the MCAT examination.
  • June 2009 Complete, submit, and certify AMCAS application, as of June 2.
  • July through November 1, 2009 - The Office of Admissions receives AMCAS applications by electronic transmission.
  • August 24, 2009- The first-year class of Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine is welcomed for Orientation Week.
  • August 28, 2009- The first-year class of Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine participates in Founders' Day and the White Coat Ceremony.
  • August through mid December 2009 - The Committee on Admissions reviews completed application files and makes interview invitation decisions.
  • Late August 2009 through mid January 2010 - Selected applicants who have completed their Feinberg application file are invited to participate in an on-campus interview day.
  • September 2009 - Last MCAT test dates for 2010 applicants. July, August, or September MCAT scores will be considered only if FSM is informed that an applicant is taking the MCAT during those months at the time the Supplemental application is submitted.
