Admission statistics

  • Approximate number of applicants per year: over 3800
  • Approximate number of applicants interviewed: 500
  • Class size: 125
  • A minimum of 82% of spaces are offered to Utah residents or Utah high school, college, or university graduates.
  • International students are eligible for consideration as long as they obtained their bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university in the United States or Canada.

Admission Requirements

Course and Degree Requirements

  • Degree: A Bachelor’s degree
  • Required Courses
    • Physics with lab: 1 year
    • Chemistry with lab: 2 years including both general and organic chemistry series
    • Biology: 2 courses
      • One course must be Cellular Biology or Biochemistry
    • Social Science: 1 course
      • history, economics, anthropology, psychology, etc.
    • Humanities: 1 course
      • art, music, drama, literature, etc.
    • Writing/Speech: 1 year
      • Emphasize written and/or verbal communications

GPA

  • Minimum: 3.2 out of 4.0 in both science and non-science courses
  • Average accepted GPA :3.6

MCAT

  • Minimum scores:7 for each section
  • Average scores: 10 for each section
  • MCAT must have been written within 3 years of application deadline and cannot be done after September of the application year.
  • For tests taken in 2013, 2014 and January, 2015 only, the best score for each section will be considered.
  • If the test is taken after April 1, 2015, only the scores from the latest test will be accepted. The minimum acceptable score is 123 in each of the four sections.

Evaluation Criteria

  • Applicants must achieve at least the minimum level of performance in all 7 areas and be average or above in 5 out of the 7 areas in order to be eligible for further consideration.
    • Grade point average (GPA)
      • Minimum: 3.2
      • Average: 3.6
    • Medical College Admission Test (MCAT)
      • Minimum: 7 in each section
      • Average: 10 in each section
    • Community/Volunteer services
      • Minimum: 36 hours within last 4 years
      • Average: 100 hours within last 4 years
    • Leadership
      • Minimum: 1 leadership experience lasting 3 months within the last 4 years
      • Average: 3 different leadership experiences each lasting 3 months within the last 4 years
    • Research
      • Minimum: part of a class where applicant answered or tested a hypothesis and received a grade
      • Average: hypothesis based research that is supervised by an individual with verifiable research credentials.
    • Physician shadowing
      • Minimum: 8 hours shadowing a physician
      • Average: 24 hours with a physician(s)
    • Patient exposure
      • Minimum: 32 hours
      • Average: 48 hours

Interview

  • Applicants invited to interview: approximately 500
  • Interview dates: September to February
  • Interview form: MMI, each last for 7 minutes; the entire session takes approximately 60 minutes
  • Interviewers: volunteers from the fourth year medical student class and faculty representatives who are physicians, investigators, administrators or community representatives who interact with the medical students

  • July 2015 - December 2015: Email sent for secondary materials
  • September 2015 - February 2016: Interviews
