Admission Requirements

General Notes

  • Preference to residents of South Carolina
  • The School of Medicine can accept applications only from those individuals who have completed their undergraduate premedical educations at a college or university in the United States or Canada.
  • Combined programs offered: MD-MPH and MD-PhD.
  • Early Decision available for exceptionally strong candidates. These applicants may only apply to the University of Southern Carolina School of Medicine

Criteria

  • Preference is given to applicants who will, upon enrollment, hold a bachelor's degree. Applicants occasionally are admitted on the basis of 90 semester hours of outstanding undergraduate achievement.

Required classes

  • minimum six (6) credits of English composition and literature
  • minimum six (6) credits of general Biology (Biology, Zoology or Botany, no more than 4 semester hours may be Botany)
  • minimum six (6) credits of introductory inorganic chemistry with laboratory work
  • minimum six (6) credits of organic chemistry with laboratory
  • histology and biochemistry are strongly preferred
  • College Level Examination Placement (CLEP) and Advanced Placement (AP) credits are acceptable, provided that such credits have been accepted by an undergraduate school toward a degree, are clearly indicated on the official transcript, and do not represent more than 25 percent of all undergraduate credit awarded. Applicants with CLEP or AP credit in basic premedical courses are advised to take a full year of course work in the same area at the more advanced level.

The Medical College Admissions Test

  • Test results within the last five years are valid

Supporting Documents

  • The School of Medicine participates in the American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS). Applications are submitted electronically and can be accessed at www.aamc.org.

Deadlines

Application submission deadline:

  • For AMCAS application: December 1st
  • For supplementary materials: January 15th

Tuition

  • Financial aid and entrance scholarships are available.
  • $39,198 base fee per year
