Program Information

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD)
  • 4 years in length
  • Average number of applicants: 350-400 Saskatchewan and 450-500 out-of-province applicants
  • Accepted in 2012: 100 (only 10% out-of-province)
  • Target class size for 2013: 84 (up to 9 for Aboriginal/native and 8 positions for out-of province applicants)

Admission Requirements

Course and Degree Requirements

  • Degree: 2 Year minimum; out-of-province applicants can only apply during last year or 4th year of degree.
  • Required Courses (Recommended for out-of-province)
    • Biology: two terms (introductory level)
    • Chemistry: two terms (introductory level)
    • Physics: two terms (introductory level)
    • English: one full year (both courses must cover literature and composition)
    • Biochemistry: two terms
    • Humanities/Social Sciences: two terms
    • English: two terms (introductory level)

GPA

  • Saskatchewan residents must have a two year minimum average of 78%
  • Out of province residents must have an average of 83% for recommended courses and the rest as well.

Realistically, to be competitive academically, an overall two-year average of 90% is required for out-of-province applicants.

  • An overall average of 70% (3.0) in the prerequisite courses is required.
  • If an applicant has an overall prerequisite average lower than 70%, higher-level courses in the same subject can be taken.
  • Only the best two years are considered.
  • Courses taken during the summer are not included in the GPA average.
  • Current year of study is not included in the overall average.

MCAT

  • Minimum scores:
    • Physical Sciences – 8
    • Biological Sciences - 8
    • Verbal Reasoning – 8
    • Writing Sample – N
      • Note: Students must have a Writing Sample of "N" and a total score of 30 for all the sections besides the Writing Sample, with a minimum of 8 in each section.

Supporting Documents

  • Official final transcripts from all universities attended.
  • Reference Letters: 3 letters are required (academic and non-academic)
    • Three letters of reference testifying the applicant’s character are required.
    • Undergraduate/Graduate/Research supervisors are acceptable references.
    • Current/previous employers, volunteer coordinators are acceptable references.
    • Family members and friends are not acceptable references.

Interview

  • Invitation based on sum of MCAT score with Verbal reasoning used as tie-breaker
  • Interviews are held in March
  • Interviews are in the form of Multiple Mini Interviews (MMIs). There are 10 stations that last 10 minutes each: 2 min. to read the situation and 8 min. to perform it.
  • The weighting of academic performance to personal qualities (MMI) for Saskatchewan residents is 35:65. Out-of-province applicants invited for an interview will be ranked for admission based 100% on the applicant's performance in the College of Medicine Multiple Mini Interview (MMI).

  • Aug. 1, 2012: Application becomes available
  • Oct. 31, 20112 (11:59 PM CST): Deadline for applications
  • February, 2013: General letter about interviews
  • March 15, 2013: Deadline for receipt of letters of reference.
  • March 16-17, 2013: Multiple Mini Interviews will be held.
  • May 14-31, 2013: Notification of application status.
