Program Information

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD)
  • 4 years in length
  • Approximately 160 available seats
  • Preference to North Carolina residents; 20 non-residents accepted each year.

Admission Requirements

Course and Degree Requirements

  • Degree: Bachelor’s degree (any discipline)
  • Required Courses:
    • Biology (8 credits) – including one biology course with laboratory
    • General and Organic Chemistry with laboratory (16 credits)
    • Physics with laboratory (8 credits)
    • Behavioural or Social Sciences (3 credits)
    • English (6 credits)
    • Note - AP credits are accepted as long as they appear on the official transcript. It is strongly recommended to take advanced level courses if AP credits were granted
  • Recommended Courses:
    • Cell and molecular biology, genetics, and biochemistry
  • Pass/Fail courses are not advised
  • International applicants must complete the prerequisites at an accredited US or Canadian university/college

  • Average GPA for 2013-2014: 3.57 (science and math), 3.62 (total cumulative)

  • Minimum score: 25
  • Average MCAT scores for class 2013-2014:
    • Physical Sciences – 10.86
    • Biological Sciences – 11.09
    • Verbal Reasoning – 10.19
  • MCAT must have been written within 3 years of AMCAS application deadline

  • Supplemental Application + non-refundable fee of $68 USD (supplemental application are emailed to qualified applicants considered for an interview)
  • Letters of Recommendation:
    • One letter from the pre-medical committee at the applicant's school; OR,
    • Two individual letters: One from a professor in the same department as the applicant AND have taught the applicant in a formal classroom setting; the other from any professor of the applicant's choice
    • Letters must be submitted by August 31st
  • Optional letters (no more than 3) may be submitted by December 31st
