  • Doctor of Medicine (MD)
    • Several joint programs are also offered:
  1. Medical Scientist Training Program (MD/PhD)
  2. Medical Doctor/Masters in Public Health
  3. Medical Doctor/Masters in Business Administration
  4. Medical Doctor/Juris Doctor
  • 4 years in length
  • Class size in 2009: 148

Admission Requirements

Course and Degree Requirements

  • Degree: A Bachelor’s degree
  • Required Courses
    • Physics with lab (6 credits)
    • Mathematics: Algebra and Trigonometry. Applicants who already have these courses must complete an advanced college Math course or a Statistics course.
    • Organic Chemistry with lab (6 credits)
    • General Chemistry with lab (6 credits)
    • Introductory Biology with lab (6 credits) or Zoology & Botany with lab (6 credits)
    • Advanced Biology course (3 credits) in either:
      • Biochemistry
      • Molecular & Cell Biology
      • Human Physiology
      • Genetics
      • Microbiology
    • English courses that include Composition & Literature (6 credits)
    • Social and Behavioural Sciences/Humanities (12 credits) in either:
      • Behavioural Psychology
      • Foreign Language course
      • Other courses that foster an appreciation for cultural variety

GPA

  • Minimum: 2.5 out of 4.0
    • It is strongly recommended to take science prerequisites using an alpha or numerical grading scheme if it offers a pass/fail option.
  • Average accepted science GPA 2009: 3.7
  • Average accepted non-science GPA: 3.83
    • 95% of applicants had a mean GPA of 3.2 or more

  • Minimum scores: There are no minimum scores, but mean accepted scores are available:
    • Physical Sciences – 10.3
    • Biological Sciences – 12
    • Verbal Reasoning – 10.8
    • Writing Sample – P
  • MCAT must have been written within 5 years of application deadline

  • Secondary Application form
  • Premedical Advisory Committee Report.
    • If the applicant’s school does not have a Premedical Advisory Committee, then he or she is required to have 2 academic letters of reference and 1 letter of reference from another person at the applicant’s discretion. A fourth letter may be sent from an individual involved in an important extracurricular activity who can make a judgement regarding the applicant’s abilities.
    • MD/PhD Applicants: One of the letters must be written from the applicant’s research supervisor.
    • Applicants applying with a Master’s degree or PhD: Applicants should submit a comprehensive report instead of the Premedical Advisory Committee Report if the applicant’s program has such a report.

Interview

  • Date: Any day between September - early February (except weekends)
    • Applicants must schedule their interview once they have been invited for one. Thus, it is best to do it early.
  • Interviews occur on campus at the Carver College of Medicine Admissions Office and are conducted by two members from the College of Medicine Faculty. The interview lasts 25 minutes. It is also recommended to dress in business attire.
  • Interviews are conducted at the Faculty of Medicine by a member of the Faculty and a current medical student
