Admission Requirements

General Notes

  • Prospective students apply through the American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS)
  • Strong recommendation that premedical students pursue a 4-year undergraduate curriculum and obtain a baccalaureate degree
  • Preference is given to California residents
  • 3 formal programs are offered for obtaining an MD degree at UCSF School of Medicine: MD, combined MD/Ph.D. and the M.S./MD Joint Medical Program

Criteria

Required Classes

  • Completion of 3 years of acceptable transfer college credits from an accredited institution
    • General chemistry (1 year, with laboratory)
    • Organic chemistry
    • Physics (1 year, with laboratory)
    • General biology (1 year, with laboratory, including the study of vertebrate zoology)
  • Courses with laboratory in vertebrate embryology, genetics, cell physiology or comparative vertebrate anatomy will satisfy the biology requirement
  • Advanced placement credit will be accepted for general chemistry and general physics
  • All course requirements for admission must be completed by June of year of entry
  • Potential applicants are recommended to take mathematics courses, upper-division biological science courses, humanities courses and English composition courses

GPA

  • Academic performance is evaluated in the context of other factors, for example: difficulty of course selection, number of units attempted and an applicant�s background
  • Applicants with a GPA below 3.20 are generally not considered favourably for admission

MCAT

  • Required of all applicants and must be taken within 3 years of date applicant plans to enter program (latest by September of the preceding year)
  • For applicants that have written the MCAT more than once: most recent scores considered

Supporting Documents

  • Invitation will be received online to complete a secondary application
  • Application requests 3-5 letters of recommendation, including at least 2 letters from the applicant�s instructors (upper division course instructors are preferred)
  • Letters that document evidence of contributions to research and other work related to science or health care are also of particular interest

Deadlines

  • October 15: AMCAS applications due, final deadline for UCSF School of Medicine
  • December - April: admissions decisions made
  • Secondary application deadline: 2 weeks from the date the applicant has been approved for a secondary application
  • May: applicants on the wait list will be notified of their status by mid-May
  • Mid May-early August: notifications of acceptance as withdrawals occur
