Admission Requirements

General Notes

  • 125 students are accepted
    • 85% is reserved for Alberta residents and 15% for non-Alberta residents

Criteria

Required classes

  • All applicants must be registered in or have completed a degree program.
    • Min. two full years of full-time university work (60 units; 10 full courses) of which one year must be taken during a regular academic year (one year must be done September to April).
  • Required courses include:
    • Full-year equivalents of (six units of) each: general chemistry, organic chemistry, biology, physics, English
  • Half-year equivalents of (three units of) each: statistics and biochemistry.
  • It is advised where possible, to take a full year of biochemistry.

GPA

  • Min. GPA requirement is 3.3 for Alberta residents, and 3.5 for non-Alberta residents.
    • The GPA average is comprised of all academic study done full-time.

The Medical College Admission Test (MCAT)

  • All applicants must write the MCAT.
  • For admission in 2008, MCAT must have been written after April 1991 and latest Sept. 2007.
  • Cutoff: 7 in all categories.
    • Average scores: 11 in bio and physical sciences, 10 in verbal and Q on the writing sample
  • Students must release their scores to the University of Alberta by November 15th (the U of A code is 254).

  • Activities list: Applicants must fill out an online form listing employment record, awards or achievements, leadership roles, volunteer work, and diversity of experience.

Deadlines

  • November 1st: Deadline for initial application
  • November 15th: Supporting documents due: official transcripts, reference letters and MCAT results.
  • February 1st: Official transcripts with the results of first semester are due
  • February 19-22: Interviews conducted
  • May 15th: Results sent to all applicants
  • June 15th: Final transcripts due
  • End of August: Orientation and registration.
