Admission Requirements

General Notes

  • 4 year program leading to degree of Doctor of Medicine
  • 100 students are admitted annually into the first year of the program
  • Students are selected on basis of a strong academic record & assessment of personal characteristics

Criteria

Required classes

  • Three years of study (90 credits) in any university program.
  • Equivalent of 1 full university credit in each of following groups:
    • Biological Science: anatomy, biochemistry, biology, botany, genetics, immunology, microbiology, physiology or zoology
    • Physical Sciences: general chemistry, geology, organic chemistry, physics
    • Humanities: classics, English, French, Foreign languages, film studies, drama, music, history, philosophy, religion
    • OR Social Sciences: anthropology, economics, geography, political science, psychology, or sociology

GPA

  • The GPA cutoff for applicants' final academic year can fluctuate every year. The most recent minimum cGPA was 3.68.
    • If applicants don't meet this requirement, an average GPA of the final two years may be considered. The most recent minimum for this was 3.78 (over the last 2 years)
  • GPA is based on the cumulative converted grade point average - http://www.ouac.on.ca/omsas/pdf/c_omsas_b.pdf
  • All undergraduate courses are included in the calculation of GPA.
  • Applicants who have completed a graduate degree & meet MCAT cut but are slightly below GPA cut will be reviewed on an individual basis by Admissions Committee.

Medical College Admission Test (MCAT)

  • MCAT must be written prior to the deadline for submission of applications to OMSAS.
  • Minimum scores for MCAT (cutoffs - vary from year to year):
    • Biological Science 10
    • Physical Science 10
    • Verbal Reasoning 10
    • Writing Sample P
  • Sum 30 P

Interviews

  • Selected candidates will be interviewed by a team including one faculty member, one community member and one student member.
  • The duration of interviews will be approximately one hour.

Selection Factors

  • The following factors will play a role in an application:
    • Academic Abilities (Commitment & Achievement, problem solving, critical thinking, self-directed learning, scientific reasoning)
    • Personal Characteristics (Ability to function as a team player, ability to communicate effectively, sensitivity to the needs of others, adaptability to cope with stress, creativity, extracurricular interests)

    • Included with on-line application
  • Canadian citizenship or Canadian permanent residents
    • by Feb. 1st following submission of OMSAS application.
    • Exception to children of Queen's University alumni who are resident outside Canada.
  • Communicable Disease Screening (Immunization) Form completed by health care provider
  • Queen's University's Criminal Records Check
  • 3 Letters of reference: referees must fax or forward reference directly to OMSAS.
    • Referees should have extensive personal knowledge of applicant & be in a position to reasonably make statements concerning applicant's character, personal qualities & academic capabilities.
    • At least 1 referee should be a non-academic/character referee.
  • Autobiographic sketch

Deadlines

  • Deadline for register for / create an account fro OMSAS: Sept.15.
  • Application submission including all transcripts and academic documents: October 1
  • Deadline for receiving payment: October 6
  • Release MCAT scores to OMSAS: October 15
  • First date for admission offers: May 15
  • Provisional acceptances become firm acceptances: June 12
  • Final transcripts received by OMSAS: June 30

Tuition

  • Tuition fee: approx. $15,628.00.
  • Fees depend on the registration date.
