Program Information

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD)
    • MD/PhD available here

  • 4 years in length
  • All students are admitted into either of two programs
    • New Pathway Curriculum: 135 students are admitted each year.
    • HST Curriculum: collaboration between Harvard and MIT. 30 students are admitted each year.

Admission Requirements

Course and Degree Requirements

  • Degree: Minimum 3 years of undergraduate study or a baccalaureate degree required prior to matriculation (any discipline)
  • Required Courses
    • Biology with laboratory (6 credits)
    • Chemistry with laboratory (12 credits)
      • e.g. General Chemistry with labs + Organic Chemistry (6 credits) with labs
    • Physics (6 credits)
    • Calculus (6 credits)
    • Expository writing (6 credits)
    • Calculus involving differential equations and 6 credits of calculus based physics are additionally required for HST Curriculum
    • Note on AP credits
      • Biology - AP credits can not be used to satisfy this requirement, upper level courses should be taken
      • Chemistry - AP credits can be used to meet one semester of this requirement if upper level courses are taken
      • Physics - AP credits can be used to meet one semester of this requirement if upper level courses are taken
      • Calculus - Calculus AB: 3 credits, Calculus BC: 6 credits
  • Recommended Courses
    • Literature, languages, arts, humanities, social sciences, computer, honours courses and independent research

  • Average accepted GPA 2009: 3.80
  • No minimum cut-off, but academic excellence is expected

  • Median scores 2009:
    • Physical Sciences – 12.09
    • Biological Sciences – 12.03
    • Verbal Reasoning – 11.01
  • No minimum cut-off, but academic excellence is expected
  • MCATs more than 3 years old must be retaken
  • Scores must be posted in AMCAS application by November 1st

Supporting Documents

  • Essay that demonstrates integrity, maturity, concern for others, leadership potential, and an aptitude for working with people
  • Maximum of six letters of recommendation allowed
    • at least 2 from science professors with whom you have taken classes
    • at least 1 from non-science professor
    • letters from ALL research supervisors are required

Interview

  • 800-1000 applicants out of 5,138 applicants invited for interviews for 2009 entering class
  • All interviews held in Boston area
  • one-on-one interview with members of the Committee of Admissions for both New Pathway and HST applicants
  • Additional interview with a faculty member and student for New Pathway applicants

Timeline

  • October 15, 2010: deadline for online AMCAS application
  • November 1, 2010: last day to submit online supplemental application, and for AMCAS to receive letters of recommendation
  • September, 2010-mid January, 2011: e-mail invitations for interviews
  • March, 2011: final decision letters mailed for all applicants
