Program Information

Admission Requirements

Course and Degree Requirements

  • Degree: Any bachelor's degree that was completed in a satisfactory manner in an educational institution located in the United States or Canada, approved by a regional accrediting body, and listed in the current Education Directory of the U.S. Office of Education.
    • At time of matriculation
  • Required Courses:
    • General Biology with laboratory: 2 semesters
    • General Inorganic Chemistry with laboratory: 2 semesters
    • Organic Chemistry with laboratory: 2 semesters
    • Physics with laboratory: 2 semesters
    • Mathematics:  2 semesters
    • English: 2 semesters
    • Demonstrated proficiency in spoken and written English
  • AP and IB credits are accepted
  • Recommended courses: Statistics, Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Foreign Languages, Genetics, Humanities, Immunology, Microbiology, Physiology, and Social Sciences

GPA

  • Average scores for 2015: 3.6-3.7 (and BCPM 3.5-3.6)
    • Note: BCPM GPA is calculated with course grade from Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Math

MCAT

  • Average scores for 2015: 31 (range 24-41) for old MCAT and 509 (range 498-519) for new MCAT
  • Scores from more than three years ago are not accepted

Supporting Documents

  • AMCAS Application
  • Secondary Application + fee ($30)
  • 3 letters of Recommendation from:
    • (a)  Health Professions Advisor or Advisory Committee letter with preferably three or more letters attached, or
    • (b) Individual letters from science faculty (no more than two), and
    • (c) Individual letter from non-science faculty (no more than one)
    • (d) and up to two additional letters as desired by the applicant (physicians, researchers, mentors, etc.)
  • Photo: passport style
  • Proof of US Citizen, or Permanent Resident Alien. (Preference is given to residents of the State of Florida)

Interview

  • Interview by Invitation
  • When: August to March
  • Where: FIU Campus
  • The interview day is approx 6 hours and each of the two interviews are 30 minutes in duration
  • Interviewers are semi-blinded - they have access to selected information on applications
  • Possible Question Topic Areas:

    • Academics
    • Self awareness
    • Commitment to the medical profession

Timeline 2017-2018

  • Early Decision Program:
    • June 30, 2017: Last day for Early Decision Program applicants to take the MCAT
    • August 1, 2017: Early Decision Program deadline for AMCAS application and official transcripts. Deadline for receipt of Secondary Application, letters of recommendation and any other supplemental materials for Early Decision Program applicants
    • September, 2017: All interviews for Early Decision Program
    • October 1, 2017: Early Decision Program applicants notified of decisions by this date. Submit FAFSA as soon as possible on or after this date
  • Regular Admissions:
    • May 2017: AMCAS application is available online to be filled out.
    • June 2017: AMCAS application may be submitted.
    • August, 2017 - March, 2018: Interviews for regular admissions applicants
    • September 30 2017: Last day for regular admissions applicants to take the MCAT.
    • October 1 2017: Submit FAFSA as soon as possible on or after this date
    • October 15 2017: First group of applicants notified of decision; We have a rolling admissions policy so applicants will be notified approximately one month after interview date.
    • December 1, 2017: Deadline for AMCAS submission (regular admissions).
    • January 15, 2018: Deadline for completion of supplemental application materials (including Secondary Application and letters of recommendation)
    • April 30, 2018: By AAMC regulations, students may hold only one acceptance after this date
    • August, 2018: Classes Begin
