Course and Degree Requirements

  • Degree: MApplicants to the Michigan College of Optometry must complete a minimum of three years (90 semester hours or 135 quarter term hours) of college or university education or have earned a baccalaureate degree prior to admission

OAT

Minimum scores: Applicants should have score of around 300 All applicants to the Michigan College of Optometry are required to sit for the Optometry Admissions Test (OAT), which is designed to measure general academic ability and scientific knowledge. The OAT test is available in computerized version only. The computer version is given continuously on an individually arranged basis. The OAT must be taken by April 1.

The topic is "Please describe what inspires your decision for becoming an optometrist, including your preparation for training in this profession, your aptitude and motivation, the basis for your interest in optometry, and your future career goals.“ – see guidelines
  • Total of three letters of references : One from professor, One from optometrist and one from applicant's choice that is not a relative, a professor or an optometrist

Timeline

Candidates are encouraged to complete the application process as soon as possible in order to receive early consideration for acceptance. You can submit your application through OptomCAS anytime after July 15th. Application files to MCO must be completed by March 1st of the year which admission is being sought. MCO follows a rolling admission process, admitting highly qualified students from September through March 1. For more information, click here
