Program Information

• Doctor of Medicine (MD)
• 4 years in length
  • Applicants with a PhD in biomedical/preclinical sciences may be eligible for a 3-year program.
• Number of applications in 2008: 5,200

Admission Requirements

Course and Degree Requirements

• Degree: Minimum of 90 hours of college credit
• Required Courses
  • English (6 credits) or a university writing course
  • Inorganic Chemistry (6 credits) with lab
  • Organic Chemistry (6 credits) with lab
  • Physics (6 credits) with lab
  • Biology (6 credits) with lab or Zoology (6 credits) with lab
  • Calculus (3 credits)
  • A college-level math course, for example Statistics (3 credits)
    • The above required courses must be successfully completed within seven years before starting the Medicine program.
• Recommended Courses
  • An introductory Biochemistry course (3 credits)

GPA

• The University does not have a cut-off GPA available, although median GPA scores of accepted students are available for 2008:
  • Overall GPA median: 3.85
  • Science GPA Median: 3.84

Other Requirements

• The candidate, within 30 days of being accepted into the program, must prove that he/she received the required immunizations. A Student Health Immunization Form and Report of Medical History must be completed before beginning the program.

• Some abilities are required by students entering into the program, such as observation, communication, motor, intellectual and emotional skills. These range from performing certain laboratory procedures to interacting positively with all kinds of people.

Interview

• Date: Mid-September to mid-February.
• It involves two half-hour sessions with faculty members to discuss about the candidate’s motivation, aptitudes, future goals, etc.
• Some common interview questions include:
  • Why did you make a particular curricular choice?
  • What are the strengths and weaknesses of your academic career?
  • What are your personal strengths and weaknesses?
  • If you could do it all again, what would you do differently and why?
  • What's the most important issue facing health care today?
  • What is the confluence of spiritualism and medicine?
  • In making complex decisions, what do you depend on as a moral or ethical guide?

Timeline

• June 1, 2008: AMCAS form release date
• July 1 – December 1, 2008: Dates where the University sends out the Duke University School of Medicine Supplemental Application
• July 15 – December 1, 2008: Supplemental Application deadline and invitation for an interview
• December 1, 2008: AMCAS application deadline
• September 14, 2008 – February 15, 2009: Interview date (one day is selected among this period)
• May 15, 2009: Deadline for tuition deposit checks (by 5:00 PM Eastern time)

Tuition 2009-2010

• Total first year cost: $ 67,138

  • Miscellaneous (rent, board, etc.): $ 18,984

  • Application fee for each additional school: $30
  • Continuation of Research Study fee: $ 50 per semester – optional; it is only for students who disrupt their studies to do research
• Students in the MD/PhD (Medical Scientist Training Program) receive a $ 26,000 stipend per year.
• Students in the MD/MA program are also required to pay one year of tuition to the Graduate school.
• Students in the MD/JD program must also pay 3 years of tuition for Law school.
