Admission Requirements

General Notes

  • Supplemental application is required for all applicants
  • Early decision is available for those that meet the criteria (see below)
  • Advanced standing admission is possible if applicant meets eligibility criteria and general requirements

Criteria

Required Classes

  • Completion of at least 90 undergraduate semester hours
  • Required courses:
    • 1 year general chemistry (including lab)
    • 1 year organic chemistry (including lab)
    • 1 year general biology (including lab)
    • 1 year English
  • Required courses for admission should not be taken under the pass-fail option

GPA

  • Majority of accepted applicants have overall GPA of 3.5 or higher
  • For early admissions, applicant must have GPA of 3.6 or higher

Medical College Admission Test (MCAT)

  • MCAT scores dated earlier than April 2003 are not accepted
  • MCAT should be written no later than Sept. of applying year
  • Only most recent test results are considered
  • For early admissions, must have a MCAT score of 33

Supporting Documents

  • 3 letters of evaluation required
  • Letters from business associates for self-employed applicants are acceptable
  • Letters must be from immediate supervisors for employed applicants
  • Second and third letters of evaluation must be from current or former professors
  • Evaluations older than 1 year are not accepted

Interview

  • All candidate applicants are interviewed
  • Interviews for early decision applicants occur in September
  • Interview dates are fixed and are held from September through to the end of February
  • Some personal characteristics sought after include: communication and leadership skills, compassion, personal integrity and a strong interest in pursuing a career in medicine
  • Other interview criteria include: community involvement, proficiency in multiple languages, socio-economic background and geographic diversity

Admission

  • Early decision application process is binding (applicant may only apply to Baylor College of Medicine)
  • Early decision applicants are notified by October 1
  • No more than 10% of accepted admissions are early decision
  • Regular acceptance decisions are made as early as October 16
  • Acceptances are not given until all interviews have been conducted

Tuition

  • Estimated 2007-2008 total for first year (includes tuition, fees, books and supplies):
    • $19,080 US for Texas residents
    • $32,180 US for non-residents
  • Estimated 2007-2008 total monthly living expenses: $1,793 US (includes room and board, transportation and personal expenses)
  • Tuition rates are significantly lower at Baylor College of Medicine compared to other private medical schools in the US
  • Scholarships; federal, Baylor College of Medicine and outside loans; and work-study opportunities are available for those students in need of financial assistance
