Admission Requirements for Master of Physical Therapy (M.P.T.)

General Notes

  • 120 interviews offered and 40 applicants admitted each year (5 of the 40 are designated to the Education Equity Program for Aboriginal Students)

Criteria

  • Four year baccalaureate degree in any discipline from a college or university
  • Successful completion of the following courses: Human Body Systems (human physiology), Human Anatomy, Statistical Methods
  • NOTE: applicants must seek and receive approval for equivalent courses from the Admissions Committee well in advance of application.
  • A certain level of physical ability is required in using physiotherapy methods.
  • A required average of 70%. For applicants with an undergraduate degree, only the two most recent academic years are considered. For applicants holding a graduate degree, all courses are considered.

Residency Requirements

  • Must be a Canadian citizen or a landed immigrant and a resident of Saskatchewan, the Yukon, Northwest or Nunavut Territories.
    • A resident is considered to have an established home at least one year prior to Sept. 1st in the year of proposed admission, or the applicant’s family resides in these provinces.
  • Applicants with a parent who has graduated from the University of Saskatchewan will also be considered.

Interview

  • Admissions interviews are scheduled for mid-March.
    • the interview evaluates personal characteristics such as interpersonal skills, professionalism, critical thinking, integrity, decision making and knowledge of health care.
  • Interview is 100 minutes long and composed of 10 stations, each with a different evaluator.
  • All applicants must sign a confidentiality agreement and a data release form.
  • The interview will be scheduled only once and cannot be rescheduled.

Admission

  • Admission scores are weighted (60% depends on your academic average, 40% on the score from the interview)
  • If accepted, applicants must participate in a full body exam.
  • Admitted applicants are required to obtain a “Level C” CPR certification during the first six weeks of the term, unless they already obtained one within the past year.
  • This certification must be renewed yearly.

  • Application forms for the 2011 cycle will be available in Fall 2010

Tuition

  • Yearly flat tuition rate of $4,653.00
  • Student fees include athletic fee, recreation fee, student services fee, GSA activity fee, GSA health and vision insurance, and GSA dental insurance. These add up to around $500 a year.
  • Additional costs may include books, housing/food, local transportation.
  • For international students on a Study Permit, there is an additional $200 international student fee.

  • 40 applicants admitted each year
  • 5 of these are designated to the Education Equity Program for Aboriginal Students
  • No statistics available since Fall 2007 is the first year the Masters program in physical therapy is being offered.

Other facts/Notes

  • Students in the M.P.T. program are engaged in academics for 11 months per year.
  • The program lasts 2 years and 6 months.
  • The program is divided into modules which include a major project, clinical education, discovery time, case integration and various evaluations.
  • For newly admitted students, school starts in mid-August.
