Admission Requirements

General Notes

  • Last year, the GPA cut off was 3.48 for the MSc OT program and 3.68 for the MSc PT program.
  • Approximately the top 300 ranked applicants to each of the MSc(OT) and MSc (PT) Programs, are invited for a personal interview.
  • Students granted admission to the program must be proficient in spoken and written English
  • Annual information sessions are held at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario and at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, Ontario

Criteria

Domestic Students

  • Domestic students: Canadian citizens or Permanent Residents in Canada
  • 4-year baccalaureate degree (120 units/credits) with minimum average of B or 75% (3.0/4.0 or 8/12), calculated over the last 60 units of university course work
  • Graduation from a 3-year baccalaureate degree (90 units/credits) requires the completion of additional university work (additional 30 units/credits) in order to be eligible for application
  • 18 units/credits must be at the 4th year level or above and a minimum average of B or 75% (3.0/4.0 or 8/12) calculated over the last 60 units of university course work is also required
  • A full or half credit in 1 biological or life science course with a minimum grade of B or 75% (3.0/4.0 or 8/12) and a full or half credit in 1 social science or humanities course with a minimum grade of B or 75% (3.0/4.0 or 8/12) is required
  • By the end of June applicants must have completed a 4-year undergraduate baccalaureate or the equivalent, and have maintained the minimum GPA over the final 60 units of university academic study

International students

  • International students are defined as those who are not Canadian citizens or not Permanent Residents in Canada
  • Enrolment is limited to 6 in the Physiotherapy program
  • Criteria is identical to domestic students for international students graduating from a 3-year or a 4-year baccalaureate degree
  • In addition to the domestic student criteria, a score of at least 600 (written) or 250 (computer) or 92 (iBT) on the TOEFL test is required, if English is not the applicant’s first language
  • TOEFL scores that are more than 2 years old are not valid
  • Applicants with foreign transcripts (excluding the US) are required to submit original documents with notarized English copies of all degree course work

Interview

  • Approximately the top 220 ranked applicants are invited for a personal interview.
  • Applicants invited to be interviewed are notified approximately 3 weeks in advance of their interview.
  • Interviews are held at the end of April and are mandatory.
  • Applicants may attend their interview either in Hamilton or Thunder Bay, Ontario, according to their preference.
  • If travel by McMaster University faculty to another location is required, an interview fee will be calculated.
  • Applicants will be notified of the admissions decision via email in May.

Admission

  • Domestic applicants are strongly encouraged to use the COMPASS.ORPAS online application service at: http://ouac.on.ca/orpas.html
  • Paper application forms should be mailed to the ORPAS – Ontario Application Centre
  • Applicants accepting the online offer of admission must submit a non-refundable deposit free for acceptance of $500 via credit card within 24 hours of accepting the online offer to hold their position for September
  • For international students a non-refundable application fee of $250 CDN (money order only) must be submitted to the Physiotherapy Admissions office
  • Also for international students, a non-refundable acceptance fee of $1,000 CDN is required to hold a place in the program when accepting an offer of admission
  • Several health immunizations are required before students enter a clinical setting
    • The flu vaccine is recommended on an annual basis and may be a requirement in many clinical settings
  • All newly accepted domestic students will receive their registration material in early August

Deadlines

  • Deadline for receipt of the ORPAS application is in mid-January
  • Deadline for receipt of transcript(s) for all university work is at the end of January
  • The McMaster Supplementary Application Form must be completed and submitted by mid-January
  • Completed registration material forms after acceptance will be required to register via online registration on SOLAR in early to mid-August
  • Failure to register on the date specified will result in a late document fee of $50

Tuition

  • For domestic students: $8,066.95 CDN per year
  • For international students: $26,250.95 CDN per year
  • Projected additional costs include: police criminal check, anatomy card, professional practical fees and in-transit placement costs
  • Domestic and international students are permitted to apply for Ontario Graduate Scholarships (OGS)
  • OGS application deadline is early October for the following academic year
  • Other governmental assistance is available: the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) and the Ontario Work-Study Program, provided the terms and conditions of the programs are met by the applicant
  • Students with current OSAP applications are automatically considered for a program bursary, but out-of-province students must apply manually
  • Bursary application deadlines are February 14th of each academic year

Other Trivia/Notes

  • The student to faculty ratio is approximately 6:1
  • 24-month program, studies are based on the philosophies of self-directed and problem-based learning, evidence-based and client-centred practice
  • Students have the option of a northern studies stream in collaboration with Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, Ontario
  • Students spend a total of 30 weeks in full-time clinical placements in a variety of practice settings
  • Graduates with a strong educational bias may be eligible to proceed to thesis-based graduate programs should they wish to do so in the future
