Admission Requirements

Course and Degree Requirements

• Applicants must have one of the following degree requirement, and have fulfilled the prerequisite and course load requirement
  • Only prerequisites taken within ten years of the application deadline are deemed acceptable.

• (1) Degree: in the final year of, or have successfully completed, an undergraduate degree program leading to a four-year undergraduate degree at a recognized university.

• Required Courses

1. 0.5 organic chemistry (with lab)
2. 0.5 biochemistry
3. 1.0 human or mammalian physiology
4. 1.0 laboratory course in biology, chemistry and physics are also recommended

• (2) Degree: be in the final year of, or have successfully completed, a graduate degree program at a recognized university. Graduate degree candidates must complete all requirements for their graduate degree (including a successful thesis defense, if applicable) by June 20 of the year of entry. It will be the students' responsibility to assure confirmation by their Faculty of Graduate Studies no later than June 20 that all requirements for the degree have been met. No deferred admission will be granted. Applicants in this category are advised that the following courses are mandatory: at least 0.5 laboratory course in organic chemistry, at least 0.5 course in biochemistry, and 1.0 course in human or mammalian physiology. It is to their advantage to have successfully completed 1.0 laboratory course in biology, chemistry, and physics.

• Full course load (equivalent to five full courses taught between September and April) is strongly advised

• Candidates must achieve an average of 80% or greater in two undergraduate-level years by the application deadline.
• Only the averages on record at the up to the end of the academic year before application deadline will be considered in the current application cycle
• Minimum Grade for Interview Invite (for 2012 admission): 84.4
• Average of Admitted Applicants (for 2012 admission): 88.35

DAT

• The cut-off DAT scores are based on the quality of all the applicants’ academic record and their DAT scores.
• Only the most recent DAT scores that must have been done within two years of the application deadline are taken into account
• The Canadian DAT is only offered twice during the year: February and November
• Scores achieved in the Reading Comprehension, Biology and Chemistry sections of the test will be considered
• For Canadian and international students residing outside Canada, the results of the ADA Dental Admissions Test (DAT) will be treated as equivalent to the results of the CDADAT

• Official transcripts from EACH university, college or other post-secondary institution attended (must be received by December 1, 2013)
  • Applicants that have not been registered at the University of Western Ontario at any time must:
    • Submit official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended.
    • Request that the applicant’s current University registrar’s office send to the University of Western Ontario an additional transcript of their current year’s grades by the end of the year (if applicable).
  • Applicants that need to provide transcripts from institutions outside of Canada must also provide the following:
    • Proof of status as a permanent resident (except for Canadian citizens)
    • A formal request if name change documents are necessary
    • Proof of English proficiency if the applicant’s mother tongue is not English by doing the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and the Test of Written English (TWE) or equivalent
    • Detailed syllabus for prerequisite courses
• Reference letters and personal statements will not be read by members of the Admissions Committee.
  • Only those regarding a situation beyond the control of the individual which affected his/her academic potential, in academic years that have the potential to be used in the admissions process,might have any influence in our admissions process (and even then, there is no guarantee that the information provided will have an effect on the entrance decision.)

• Proof that the candidate has been tested for Hepatitis B.

• Applicants are ranked on a compiled score representing:
  • 60% academics
  • 15% DAT score
  • 25% interview

Interview

• Date: Interviews are usually held during a weekend in April each year.
• One must meet competitive levels in the DAT Reading Comprehension sectional score in combination with achieving competitive university grades in order to be invited to an interview.
• Interviews are conducted by a dentist, a senior dental student and a layperson.
• The questions are in the Canadian Dental Association (CDA) format.

Timeline for 2013 Entrance

• November 2012: DAT examination
• December 1, 2012: Application deadline and deadline for transcripts to be reached by the University
• Early March, 2013: Interview invitations, and declines sent
• April 13 and 14, 2013: Entrance interviews
• mid-May: Admission results released
• June 15, 2013: Deadline for the last academic year’s transcript to be received by the University
• June 20, 2013: Deadline (for graduate students) to complete all requirements for their graduate program
