Program Information

• Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS)
• 4 years in length
• Number of applications in 2010: 462
• Class size in 2010: 65
  • A maximum of 10% of spaces are offered for out-of-province applicants
• Applicants must apply during 3rd year of university at the earliest.
• Applicants who have been refused to go on to a higher year in their university education are ineligible to apply.
• Applicants who have failed any dental program are ineligible to apply.

Course and Degree Requirements

• Degree: Minimum 3 years of undergraduate study (15 full year courses) deemed equivalent to 3 years of undergraduate education at the University of Toronto.

GPA

• Minimum: 3.0 out of 4.0
• Minimum accepted GPA 2012 (domestic applicants invited for an interview): 3.79
• Minimum accepted GPA 2012 (international applicants invited for an interview): 3.75
• Calculation method:
  • Courses completed during the year of entry are not counted towards the GPA.
  • The lowest academic year is not counted towards the GPA if the candidate fulfills the following:

1. Successfully completed, by May 31 of the year of entry, 4 or more years of university studies.
2. The lowest academic year is not the candidate’s most recent completed year.

DAT

• The University does not have cut-off DAT scores available, although scores of 19 or more are considered competitive.
• Only the Academic Average and Perceptual Ability Test scores are taken into consideration (but the whole test must be completed).
• The Canadian DAT is only offered twice during the year: February and November
• DAT must have been written within 2 years of the application deadline.
• The highest set of scores DAT scores are taken into account if the test was written more than once.
• The American DAT is only accepted for applicants not living in Canada.

Supporting Documents

• Application form
• Application fee of $ 250.00
• Photocopy of proof of Canadian citizenship or permanent resident status
• DAT Score Report (except for candidates requesting a transfer)
• Official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended
• A statement (max. 750 words) on paper to the Faculty to assist in assessing candidate’s qualifications if he/she wishes to do so.
• Proof that the candidate has received the following immunizations:
  • Rubella
  • Tetanus
  • Polio
  • Hepatitis B
• The candidate must also provide proof of a current Tuberculin Test and/or a negative chest X-ray.
• Proof of English proficiency for candidates whose first language is not English. Either one of the following tests must be completed within 2 years of the application deadline:
• Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)

Minimum score (paper-based test): total score 600 + 5.0 on TWE

Minimum score (computer-based test): total score 250 + 5.0 on Essay

Minimum score (Internet-based test): total score 100 + 22 on Writing

• International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic Moedule

Minimum band: 6.5 (no band below 6.0)

• Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB)

Minimum overall: 85 (no part under 80)

• Certificate of Proficiency in English (COPE)

Minimum overall: 86

Minimum Writing: 32

Minimum Reading: 22

Minimum Listening: 22

• Academic preparation ESL Course, School of Continuing Studies

Minimum grade: B (at the 60/Advanced level)

Other Information

• Candidates must be a Canadian citizen or have status as a permanent resident by the application deadline.
• Candidates need the following certificates by registration day of the 1st year of the DDS program:

1. Canadian Red Cross Society or St. John’s Ambulance course in First Aid (or any equivalent)
2. CPR Basic Rescuer course

• Aboriginal Applicants are given special consideration when applying.
• Graduate Applicants need a letter of reference from their graduate supervisor and must complete all their graduate program requirements.
• The University considers only the most recently completed program for applicants who completed more than one undergraduate program.
• Domestic Transfer Applicants may request a transfer into the 2nd year of the DDS program if there is space left.
• International Transfer Applicants may request a transfer into the 1st year of the DDS program if there is space left. However, some applicants may be eligible to enter into the 2nd year.

Interview

• Interviews will be held on a weekend during the end of March – early April 2013.
• Interviews are conducted by two members of the Faculty or alumni.
• The interview lasts about 30 minutes.

• December 1, 2012, 5pm: Application deadline; deadeline to submit DAT scores
• End of February 2013: Invitation for interview are sent out
• End of March – early April 2013: Interviews are held
• Mid-April 2013: Offers of acceptance by e-mail
