Program Information

  • Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD)
  • 4 years in length

  • Class size in 2011: 48 (45 were British-Columbia residents, 5 were non-BC residents)
  • Only Canadian citizens or Permanent Residents are eligible

Admission Requirements

Course and Degree Requirements

  • Degree: Minimum of 3 years (90 credits) at a recognized university by April of the year of admission
  • Required Courses
    • English (6 credits)
    • Chemistry (6 credits)
    • Biology (6 credits)
    • Organic Chemistry (6 credits)
    • Biochemistry (6 credits)

GPA

  • Minimum CGPA: 2.8 (4.0 scale)
  • Average grade (%) of all applicants 2011: 80.01%
    • Average grade of all interviewed applicants 2011: 83.76% (86.25% for Non-BC residents)
    • Average grade of all accepted applicants 2011: 83.31% (86.18% for Non-BC residents)
  • All college/university work taken into account (including failed courses)
  • Worst year will be dropped for applicants who have completed 4+ years of college/university

DAT

  • Dental Aptitude Test – only Canadian version accepted
  • Three components used in calculations:
    • Academic Test
    • Perceptual Test
    • Carving Test (minimum score of 12 required)
  • Mean DAT scores 2009:
    • Academic Average – 20
    • Perceptual Ability & Carving – 21.8
  • Must be written by the November exam date prior to admission year
  • DAT must have been written within 5 years of application
  • Best score used if written multiple times

Supporting Documents

  • Online UBC DMD Application Form
  • Official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended
    • International Transcripts must be sent with translated and notarized English versions and pre-requisite course outlines
    • High School Transcripts required from applicants who have not been registered at UBC
  • Reference letters are no longer required. (They will not be considered.)
  • DAT scores sent directly from the CDA
  • Registration fee of $ 204

Interview

  • Held in February
  • Lasts 35 minutes in length to assess the applicant’s capabilities related to the dental profession.
  • CDA qualified team consisting of 2-3 interviewers (general practitioners, faculty members and dental students)
  • Average Interview Score 2011: 27.06 (26.06 for Non-BC)
    • Average Interview Score of Accepted 2011: 27.36 (29.44 for Non-BC)
