Admission Requirements

Course and Degree Requirements

• Degree: Minimum 60 credits completed of post-secondary studies (10 full year course equivalents or 20 half year course equivalents)
  • Of the 60 credits, 30 credits must be taken during the academic year (Fall/Winter semester).

  • General Chemistry (6 credits)
  • Organic Chemistry (6 credits)
  • Biology (6 credits)
  • Physics (6 credits)
  • English (6 credits)
  • Statistics (3 credits)
  • Biochemistry (3 credits)
• Note
  • The prerequisite requirements must be passed with a minimum grade of C-.
  • General Chemistry: IB Chemistry HL with a grade of 6 or 7 is equivalent to Chemistry 101 (3 credits).
  • Biology: IB Biology HL with a grade of 6 or 7 is equivalent to Biology 107 (3 credits).
  • English: IB English HL with a grade of 6 or 7 will meet the English requirement.

GPA

• Minimum CGPA: 3.0
  • Students with a GPA of less than 3.0 will not be considered for admission
• The minimum competitive GPA is 3.5
• Mean GPA of Admitted Applicants for Admission in 2012: 3.86 (with a range from 3.66 - 4.00)
• For applicants who have completed at least four or more years of full-time postsecondary work, the semester with the lowest GPA will not be included in the calculation of the cumulative GPA (provided that the worst semester is not the most recent Fall/Winter or the only semester with a full course load).

DAT

• Minimum scores:
  • Reading Comprehension – 15
  • Perceptual Ability – 15
  • Manual Dexterity – 15
• Mean scores 2012:
  • Reading Comprehension – 21.24 (with a range from 16 - 30)
  • Perceptual Ability – 21.33 (with a range from 16 - 29)
  • Manual Dexterity – 23.36 (with a range from 16 - 30)
• Only the Canadian DAT version accepted
• Must be written by the November exam date prior to admission year
• DAT must have been written within 5 years of application
• Best score is used if written multiple times
• The DAT results must be submitted to the Admissions Office by January 15 of the admission year

Admission Formula

• Overall GPA (50% of overall rank score)
  • The overall GPA is calculated from the work completed as a full-time student
• Dental Aptitude Test (DAT) scores (25% of overall rank score)
  • The DAT score will be comprised of the sum of reading comprehension, perceptual ability and manual dexterity.
• Interview score (25% of overall rank score)

Supporting Documents

• Completed University of Alberta online undergraduate application
• Registration fee ($ 75 for University of Alberta students, $ 115 for all other students)
• Results from the Canadian Dental Aptitude Test
• Official transcripts of your academic record. All previous post-secondary academic records must be provided.
• English Language Proficiency/Spoken English Requirement (if required).
• Applicants with extenuating circumstances may submit a request for special considerations in writing.

Interview

• All required documents must be sent before February 1 in order to be evaluated for the interview selection
• Applicants selected to interview will be contacted by email by the end of February.
• The interview consists of determining the student’s interest for the field, motivation as well as assessing their personal traits.
• The interview format is the Multiple Mini Interview (MMI).
  • The interviewee will be exposed to a series of stations (without interruption), each of which will take 10 minutes to complete.
  • The interviews must be done in person at the University of Alberta
• Interview usually occurs during March. (For the 2013 cycle, interviews are scheduled for Saturday, March 9, 2013.)

Timeline

• November 1: Deadline to submit the online application and send the registration fee.
• November 15: Deadline for receiving official transcripts showing registered courses for the Fall semester.
• January 15: Deadline to receive DAT results.
• January 31: Deadline to receive the Special Consideration request.
• February 1: Deadline to receive official transcripts showing Fall semester grades and registered courses for the Winter semester.
• March 9, 2013: 2013 Interview
• June 15: Deadline to receive official transcripts of showing Fall and Winter course grades. (And, receipt of English Language Proficiency and Spoken English Requirement if applicable)
