Admission Requirements

Different programs are offered within the School of Dentistry: I) Four-year program for the degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS

III) MSc and PhD degrees in Medical Sciences (Dentistry or Orthodontics)

Criteria

DDS Program

  • completion of 60 units of course weight (30 of which must be in one academic year)
  • completion of Statistics and Biochemistry (1 semester each). Successful completion of 1 year each of Gen. Chem., Organic Chem, Biology, Physics, English
  • Dental Aptitude Test (DAT) with a minimum score of 15 on each part. Must be the Canadian DAT test.
  • cumulative GPA of 3.0 and minimum of 15 on DAT.

Dental Hygiene Diploma

  • 30 units of course weight, 24 of which must be taken in one academic year
  • full year of English, one semester each of Gen Chem, Org Chem, Biology, Sociology, Psychology and Statistics
  • minimum GPA of 2.70

Residency Requirements

  • a resident of Alberta is defined as a permanent resident of Alberta, Yukon, Northwest Territories or Nunavut for at least one year

Deadlines

  • 2 official transcripts showing completed work to date by Nov. 15th.
  • Two official transcripts including the fall semester by Feb. 1st.
  • Two official final transcripts by June 15th.
  • Results of the DAT must be submitted by Jan 15th.

Tuition

DDS Program

  • For Canadian citizens, tuition is approx. $17,700 a year.
  • Book costs range from $400 to $1200 a year.
  • DSA/CDA annual fees of $170.
  • Cost for Dental instruments range from 600$ to $10,000 a year.
  • For non-Canadian citizens, annual tuition is $42,445

Statistics

  • Admission to DDS program is limited to 30 each year. 85% of these are Alberta residents, 5% are international students and 10% to other Canadians.
  • Admission scores for each student are weighted: 30% for academic average, 30% for average in pre-requisite classes, 30% for the DAT, and 10% for the interview.
  • 2006 stats: average GPA for admitted students was 3.80. DAT scores averaged 22.6 for reading, 20.1 for PAT, and 24.1 for manual section.
  • for the Dental Hygiene program, approx. 40 applicants are accepted with mean GPAs of 3.00
