Admission Requirements

General Notes

  • Application must be submitted through AADSAS at https://portal.aadsasweb.org
  • Applicants must submit all official transcripts to AADSAS for any academic course work attempted or completed at any institution
  • A four year program leading to a DMD (Doctor of Dental Medicine)
  • DDS/PhD Program offered, allowing students to pursue a PhD in oral biology, neuroscience / psychobiology, biomedical engineering, and, the Integrated Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program while enrolled in the DDS program.
  • 75% of the class (70 of 101 seats) is comprised of Ohio residents.
  • For the 2008-2009 year, 101 students were admitted out of 1092 applicants.

Criteria

  • Applicants with bachelor’s degrees, prior to admission, are preferred. Applications must include all prerequisite courses, DAT score, and a recommended GPA of ‘B’ or higher.
  • All applicants are required to have a minimum of 20 observation hours in a dental office.
  • Applicants with a strong history of experience community service are preferred.
  • Potential applicants may apply after successful completion of 90 quarter hours or 60 semester hours.
  • A grade of "B" or better in the required courses is recommended.
  • Potential applicants may apply after completion of two-thirds of the prerequisite courses. Prerequisite courses must be completed with a grade of "C" or higher.
  • Selection criteria is based on a formula:
    • 60% Academic - based on overall GPA & DAT Academic Average
    • 10% Technical - based on DAT Perceptual Ability score; must be > 13
    • 10% Non-academic Experiences - based on volunteer, employment, leadership, research, sports and other experiences
    • 20% Interview

  • Biochemistry – 1 semester
  • Biology – 2 semesters
  • Inorganic Chemistry* – 2 semesters
  • Organic Chemistry* – 2 semesters
  • English and Advanced Composition – 2 semesters
  • Microbiology – 1 semester
  • Physics* – 1 semester
  • Physiology – 1 semester

(*)If university does not require lab to be concurrently taken with course, then Ohio State Dentistry does not require lab.

GPA

  • Average GPA of admitted applicants in 2008 was 3.69. The average Science GPA was 3.61. Biology, Chemistry, and Physics GPA was 3.589.
  • Applicants should have an overall GPA of “B” or better.

DAT

  • Applicants are required to write the DAT (either the American or Canadian version, though the American version is preferred)
  • Applicants should have DAT scores of 18 or better
  • Applicants must complete the DAT no later than October 1st of the admissions year to be considered
  • DAT scores are accepted for two years. If DAT scores are older than two years at the time of application, then the DAT must be retaken.
  • Average score for accepted applicants in 2008 was 18.45 for Academic Average, 18.58 for Total Science and 19.35 for Perceptual Ability.

Supporting Documents

  • As part of the AADSAS application, applicants must submit:
  • All official university/college transcripts
  • Two letters of recommendation submitted electronically to AADSAS
    • One from college science professor
    • One from someone who knows you well
    • Letters from dentists observed are accepted
  • Required Supplemental Application regarding residency to be completed
    • Standard protocol for state-supported dental schools to establish residency status.
    • Must be completed within one week of receiving the email link
    • Supplemental Application fee of
      • $60.00 or U.S. or permanent citizens)
      • $70.00 (international students)

Interviews

  • All interviews take place in person and are by invitation only. All interviews took place on Interview Events on campus from October to December.
  • Circa 180 applicants are interviewed for 104 seats.
  • Applicants are interviewed by five Admissions committee members - Three faculty members and two dental students
  • Interviews last approximately one hour. Professional business attire is recommended.

Deadlines for Fall 2009 Admission

  • May 15, 2008 – Application becomes available on AADSAS website
  • June 1st – OSU begins processing applications
  • September 15th – Deadline for Applications
  • October through December – Interview events
  • December 8th – Offers of Acceptance mailed

Tuition

  • For Class of 2012, Ohio Resident Annual (3 quarters) Tuition is with total expenses of $46,664.
  • Non Resident Annual Tuition of $ 56,793, with total expenses of $76,626.
  • Dental students are eligible to apply for residency after 12 months or instant residency in certain cases.
