Program Information

  • Doctor in Dental Surgery (DDS)
    • 4 year program
  • Number of applications in 2009: approximately 500
  • Class size: accept up to 38
    • Preference is given to permanent residents of the Atlantic provinces.

Admission Requirements

Course and Degree Requirements

  • Degree: Minimum of 60 credit hours of university study. A Bachelor’s degree is not required but recommended (especially if graduate studies are intended).
  • Required Courses
    • Biology with Lab (6 credits)
    • General chemistry with Lab (6 credits)
    • Physics with Lab (6 credits)
    • Organic Chemistry with Lab (6 credits)
    • Arts and/or Social Sciences (12 credits)
    • Writing Course (6 credits)
    • Biochemistry (3 credits)
    • Microbiology (3 credits)
    • Vertebrate Physiology (6 credits)

GPA

  • Minimum: No minimum GPA specified, but applicants with best academic record have greater chance of admission
  • Average accepted grade of final 60 university credit hours 2009: A
  • Average accepted grade of required science courses 2009: A-

DAT

  • Minimum scores:
    • Reading Comprehension – 15
    • Science Average – 15
    • Manual Dexterity – 15
    • Perceptual Ability – 15
  • Average scores 2009:
    • Average of all DAT components: 19.2
  • For the class entering in September 2013 (and later) Manual Dexterity (carving) scores will not be considered
  • Canadian or US DAT accepted (Canadian Citizens residing in Canada must complete Canadian DAT)
  • DAT must have been written within 2 years of application
  • DAT must be written by February of the year of admission

Interview

  • On a Saturday in March or April
  • Interviews are structured and conducted at the Faculty of Dentistry by 2 dentists and last 40 minutes.
  • Applicants with the highest university grades are selected for interview.
  • Interviews are conducted by a team of 2-3 trained interviewers, using a structured interview format.
  • A Personality Inventory Questionnaire will be done on the same day of the interview.

  • December 1: Application and application fee deadline
  • February 1: All supporting documents (Reference Evaluation Forms must be received.)
  • March – April, 2011: Interviews are held.
  • May 1: All pre-requisite courses must normally be completed by this date.
