General Notes
Different programs are offered within the School of Dentistry:
I) Four-year program for the degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS)
II) Three-year program for the Diploma in Dental Hygiene (Dental Hygiene Specialization is completed in the fourth year and is optional)
III) MSc and PhD degrees in Medical Sciences (Dentistry or Orthodontics)
Doctor of Dental Surgery Program (DDS)
Required Application Documents & Respective Deadline Dates:
1.) online application of University of Alberta for Admission, Readmission, or Internal Transfer including the non-refundable application fee of $100
- Deadline: November 1, 2008 (for admission to Fall 2009 term)
2.) DAT results:
- Deadline:
- November 2008 test application submission – September 15, 2009
- February 2009 test application submission – January 15, 2010
- November 2008 test application submission – September 15, 2009
3.) Two Official Transcripts (for each deadline)

- November 15, 2008 – showing completed work to date
- February 1, 2009 – showing Fall term grades & Winter term course registration

- tuition: $ 17 700/year for Canadian students; $ 42 500/year for non-Canadian students

Statistics of Applicants:
- Of 34 seats in the program, approximately 85% are reserved for Alberta residents, 10% for out-of-province Canadians, and 5% for International (Visa) students
- In 2007, 395 students applied, 172 of whom were considered qualified, with 34 registered students in the program after the interview process.
- Weighted Breakdown of Admission requirements: 30% cGPA, 30% GPA of pre-requisites, 30% DAT results, & 10% interview results
- Overall GPA: 3.60 and above (mean 3.79)
- Pre-requisite 3.63 and above (mean 3.81)
- DAT:
- Reading: 17 – 30 (mean 21.65)
- PAT: 18 – 25 (mean 21.03)
- Manual: 15 – 30 (mean 23.62)
Tuition
DDS Program
- For Canadian citizens, tuition is approx. $17,700 a year.
- Book costs range from $400 to $1200 a year.
- DSA/CDA annual fees of $170.
- Cost for Dental instruments range from 600$ to $10,000 a year.
- For non-Canadian citizens, annual tuition is $42,445

Statistics
- Admission to DDS program is limited to 30 each year. 85% of these are Alberta residents, 5% are international students and 10% to other Canadians.
- Admission scores for each student are weighted: 30% for academic average, 30% for average in pre-requisite classes, 30% for the DAT, and 10% for the interview.
- 2006 stats: average GPA for admitted students was 3.80. DAT scores averaged 22.6 for reading, 20.1 for PAT, and 24.1 for manual section.
- for the Dental Hygiene program, approx. 40 applicants are accepted with mean GPAs of 3.00
