Admission Requirements

General Notes

  • Around 5000 applications are expected yearly for 190 to195 seats.

Criteria

Required classes:

  • All students must have completed an undergraduate program
  • No required classes or majors
  • Admissions considers overall GPA, and how you compare to other candidates from the same program and institution
  • Academic honours, the difficulty of the academic program, and the quality of the university is also taken into account

GPA

  • There is no GPA cutoff, but last year’s entering class had an average GPA of 3.66.

The Law School Admissions Test (LSAT)

  • Must have a current score (within four years of the date your application is submitted)
  • Must submit all LSAT scores, but the higher score will be given more weight
  • There is no LSAT cutoff, but last year’s entering class had a median LSAT score of 171.

Supporting Documents

  • Transcripts: must use the LSAC JD CAS to evaluate Canadian transcripts.
  • Resume: describe employment, extracurricular activities and volunteering
  • Personal statement: Focus on some personal attribute or experience. It should be 2 to 3 pages.
  • Letters of Recommendation: 2 are required, but up to four can be sent. It is strongly recommended that at least one letter is from an academic instructor.

Interview

  • Some competitive applicants will be invited to come to Chicago for an evaluative interview
  • Other applicants may be requested to submit an additional writing sample as part of their application
  • You cannot request an interview.

Admission

  • Decisions for Early Applicants will be made by the end of December, and all decisions will be made by the end of March
  • Once admitted, response forms are due back May 1st.

  • December 1st: Deadline for applying Early Decision.
  • End of December: Decisions released for Early Decision applicants
  • February 1st: Deadline for applying Regular Decision
  • Late March: Tuition and budget information, as well as university housing applications, mailed to all admitted applicants.
  • May 1st: Response forms due back to the Admissions Office

Tuition

  • Tuition for 2007/2008 is $39,198 for the nine-month academic year.
  • The average budget, including tuition for a single student is $61,167
  • A $1,500 loan is available to all students to cover the cost of a computer
  • Over half of the students at the Law School receive scholarships.
