Program Information

  • All programs of study are intended to lead towards a PhD degree. Students only interested in a MA degree should not apply.
  • The Department of Psychology has 47 full-time faculty members, several honorary and emeritus professors, and a large professional support staff.
  • There are currently about 100 Psychology graduate students plus 26 students from Neuroscience and other departments being supervised by our faculty members.
  • The department adheres to an "apprenticeship" model of graduate training in which each graduate student initially works in close collaboration with a particular faculty member.

  • Applicants only apply to the PhD program if you already have a master degree in Psychology, otherwise you can apply to the Masters program.
  • accepts between 15 and 25 students from approximately 300 applicants.

Admission Requirements

Course and Degree Requirements

  • The usual prerequisite to the MA program is a four-year BA or BSc with a major or honours in Psychology.

GPA

  • at least an 80% (or a GPA of 3.5) average in the last two years of undergraduate courses.

GRE

  • Scores greater than 80% on all components are normally required.
  • GRE results (taken less than 24 months ago; the GRE General Test is required, the GRE Psychology subject-test is recommended but not required)

Language Proficiency

Proficiency in English must be demonstrated:

  • TOEFL
    • Paper-based: minimum score 580, TWE 5.0
    • Computer-based: minimum score 230, TWE 5.0
  • MELAB: minimum score 85
  • IELTS: minimum score 7
  • COPE: minimum score 4, with at least a 1 in every component and 2 in writing.

Supporting Documents

  • 2 official copies of all university-level transcripts
  • 3 reference letters sealed with signature across flap
  • Test results (TOEFL (minimum CBT 230), IELTS, CAEL, etc)
  • All applicants must provide a detailed statement of their interests and objectives in Psychology.
  • Files will be reviewed starting in mid-December with early decisions made by mid-January. We will attempt to notify all applicants of our decision by April 1st.
