Program Information

  • All programs of study are intended to lead towards a PhD degree. Students only interested in a MA degree should not apply.
  • There are currently about 100 Psychology graduate students plus 26 students from Neuroscience and other departments being supervised by our faculty members.
  • The department adheres to an "apprenticeship" model of graduate training in which each graduate student initially works in close collaboration with a particular faculty member.
  • Strongly research oriented

    • Social/Personality
  • Applicants only apply to the PhD program if you already have a master degree in Psychology, otherwise you can apply to the Masters program.
  • Accepts between 15 and 25 students from approximately 300 applicants.

Admission Requirements

Course and Degree Requirements

  • MA program: four-year BA or BSc with a major or honours in Psychology.
  • PhD program: MA or MSc in Psychology
    • High quality MA thesis research is a major prerequisite for admission to the PhD program.

GPA

  • At least an 80% (or a GPA of 3.5) average in the last two years of undergraduate courses.

GRE

  • Scores greater than 80% on all components are normally required.
  • All applicants are required to take the GRE (taken less than 24 months ago)
  • The GRE General Test is required; the GRE Psychology subject-test is recommended but not required)

  • 2 official copies of all university-level transcripts
  • 3 reference letters submitted electronically or by paper; a copy of the form can be found here
  • All applicants must provide a detailed statement of their interests and objectives in Psychology. Students must also identify faculty members they are interested in working with.
  • Proof of English Proficiency (if applicable)
    • TOEFL: minimum CBT = 230, minimum PBT = 550
  • Completion of the TWE and the TSE components of the TOEFL are also recommended

Tuition 2012-2013

  • Canadian students: $4,349 per year
  • International students: $7,640 per year

  • MA students receive $16,000 per year for two years of study
  • PhD students receive $17,000 per year for four years of study
