Course and Degree Requirements

Master’s Program
  • Degree: Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology or a related field equivalent to a 4-year Bachelor’s degree from the University of British Columbia
  • Required Courses
    • Microbiology
    • Biochemistry
    • General Biology
    • General Chemistry
PhD Program
  • Degree: Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology or a related field equivalent to Master’s degree from the University of British Columbia. Students must show strong research potential as well.
    • Students may apply to the PhD program after finishing one year of the Master’s program.

GPA

Master’s Program
  • Minimum: An average of “B+” (76% at UBC) during the last two years of undergraduate study or have 12 credits worth of 3rd or 4th-year courses with an “A-“ average (80% at UBC).
PhD Program
  • Minimum: An average of “B+” (76% at UBC) during the Master’s degree.

GRE

  • The GRE is only required for International Students, but still recommended for North American students.
  • Minimum score: 600 range in Quantitative and Analytical sections

Supporting Documents

  • Application form (online)
  • Two sets of transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended
  • TOEFL scores (if applicable)
  • GRE scores (if applicable)
  • Three letters of recommendation from people can make a judgement regarding the applicant’s abilities.
  • Scientific Interest Form: A list of faculty members that the applicant would like to work with. In addition, there must be a summary (no longer than a page) of scientific interests and goals.
  • Information regarding professional and research experience and/or awards received. This information is optional. However, those who have been out of university for more than two years must provide this information.

Other Requirements

  • Proof of English proficiency for the applicants outside of Canada for those who English is not the language of instruction at the applicant’s current university. Candidates that fall in this category must fulfill the English requirement with one of the following minimum scores:
  1. Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL):
  • Internet-based test: 100 total
  • Paper-based test: 590
  • Computer-based test: 243
  1. International English Language Testing Service (IELTS): Band of 6.5 overall and 6.0 in each academic component
  2. Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB): 81 overall
  3. GCE A-Level English Examination: Minimum of “B”
