Program Information

  • Microbiology & Immunology
  • Master of Science (M.Sc.) - 2 years
    • research-based program comprised of coursework, a teaching assistantship, and completion and defense of a thesis
  • Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)
    • research-based program comprised of coursework, a teaching assistantship, department seminar, expectation to publish original research, completion and public defense of a thesis
  • M.D./Ph.D. - 7-year program
    • offered jointly by the Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies
    • designed for students who want to pursue a career as clinician-scientists
  • Research areas include:
    • Infection, Immunity, & Inflammation
    • Pathogenesis
    • Viruses
    • Bacterial physiology
    • Microbiome
    • Cancer Therapy
    • Microbial Ecology, Diversity & Geochemistry
    • Antibiotic Resistance & Biofilms
  • Applicants may start either the MSc or PhD program in September (Fall semester), January (Winter semester) or May (Summer semester)

Admission Requirements

Course and Degree Requirements

Master’s Program

  • Degree: Normally, the academic equivalent of a four-year bachelor's degree from UBC including one of the following:
    • A minimum overall average in the B+ range (76% at UBC) in third- and fourth-year courses
    • Academic standing with at least 12 credits of third- or fourth-year courses in the A grade range (80% or higher at UBC) in the field of study

PhD Program
Applicants must have completed one of the following requirements prior to admission:

  • A master's degree (or equivalent) from an approved institution with clear evidence of research ability or potential
  • A bachelor’s degree with one year of study in a master's program with 9 credits at the 500-level or above and of first class standing, with clear evidence of research ability or potential
    • Students entering the doctoral program after partial completion of the master’s degree must, during the first two years of study at the graduate level, complete a total of 12 credits with a first-class average (of which at least 9 credits must be at the 500-level or above and at least 9 credits must be of first-class standing) to maintain registration as a doctoral student
    • Transfer directly into a doctoral program will not be permitted after completion of the second year
  • In exceptional cases, applicants who hold a bachelor's degree with an overall average in the A grade range and who demonstrate advanced research ability may be granted direct admission to a doctoral degree program on recommendation of the admitting graduate program and approval of the Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies
    • Students entering directly from a bachelor's degree must, during the first two years of study, complete a total of 12 credits with a first class average, of which at least 9 credits must be at the 500-level or above and at least 9 credits must be of first class standing, to maintain registration as a doctoral student

  • GRE scores (mandatory for international applicants)
    • a score in the 148 range in Quantitative section and 4 in the Analytical section is recommended
  • 3 academic letters of recommendation
    • discussing academic preparation, originality, skills at research, intellectual capacity and general ability
    • appropriate referees: Faculty research supervisors, University professors, science industry employers
  • Scientific Interest Form
    • list of faculty/associate members applicant is most interested in working with & a brief (less than one page) summary of your scientific interest and goals in attending UBC
    • attached to your online application
  • Other: applicant may append additional information regarding professional employment experience, publications, or awards
    • mandatory if applicant has been out of university for more than two years

Timeline

If you are a Canadian citizen or Permanent Resident and wish to have your Tri-Council Master Scholarship considered through the Department of Microbiology and Immunology you must apply to this Graduate program by Dec 31st

International students must apply early in the cycle. This allows time for credential verification GRE, Language scores and study permit processing.

Application Deadlines:

  • Program Starting September 1st: February 1st (international), February 15th (domestic)
  • Program Starting January 1st: August 15th (international), August 30th (domestic)
  • Program Starting May 1st: October 30th (international), November 30th (domestic)

  • Full-time (for a Standard Master's Degree Program), per year: $4,897.86 (domestic), $8,604.66 (international)

Funding

Minimum Stipend Guarantee:

  • Master's: $19,000
  • PhD: $21,000

Students are expected to seek additional funding opportunities including individual scholarships, awards, and Teaching Assistantships.
