Program Information

  • Microbiology & Immunology
  • Master of Science (M.Sc.) - 2 years
    • research-based program comprised of coursework, a teaching assistantship, and completion and defense of a thesis
  • Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)
    • research-based program comprised of coursework, a teaching assistantship, department seminar, expectation to publish original research, completion and public defense of a thesis
  • M.D./Ph.D. - 7-year program
    • offered jointly by the Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies
    • designed for students who want to pursue a career as clinician-scientists
  • Research areas include:
    • Infection, Immunity, & Inflammation
    • Pathogenesis
    • Viruses
    • Bacterial physiology
    • Microbiome
    • Cancer Therapy
    • Microbial Ecology, Diversity & Geochemistry
    • Antibiotic Resistance & Biofilms
  • Applicants may start either the MSc or PhD program in September (Fall semester), January (Winter semester) or May (Summer semester)

Admission Requirements

Course and Degree Requirements

Master’s Program
  • Degree: Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology or a related field equivalent to a 4-year Bachelor’s degree from the University of British Columbia
  • Required Courses
    • Microbiology
    • Biochemistry
    • General Biology
    • General Chemistry
PhD Program
  • Degree: Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology or a related field equivalent to Master’s degree from the University of British Columbia. Students must show strong research potential as well.
    • Students may apply to the PhD program after finishing one year of the Master’s program.
  • In exceptional cases, applicants with a Bachelor's degree and an overall average of at least an A- and who demonstrate advanced research ability may be admitted into the PhD program.

GPA

Master’s Program
  • Minimum: An average of “B+” (76% at UBC) during the last two years of undergraduate study or have 12 credits worth of 3rd or 4th-year courses with an “A-“ average (80% at UBC).
PhD Program
  • Minimum: An average of “B+” (76% at UBC) during the Master’s degree.

GRE

  • The GRE is only required for international students, but still recommended for North American students.
  • Minimum score: 600 range in Quantitative and 4 in Analytical sections
  • GRE must have been taken within the past two years from date of application

Supporting Documents

  • Online application form
  • Two sets of transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended
  • Three letters of recommendation from individuals who can report on the applicant's academic ability and qualifications. For tips, click here
  • Scientific Interest Form: A list of faculty members that the applicant would like to work with. In addition, applicant must provide a summary (no longer than a page) of scientific interests and goals.
  • TOEFL scores: required for applicants whose primary language is not English or applicants who received their undergraduate degree in any language other than English

      • Internet-based: 100
      • Paper-based: 590
      • Computer-based: 243
  • GRE scores (if applicable)
  • Information regarding professional and research experience and/or awards received. This is optional except for those who have been out of university for more than two years.

Tuition 2012-2013

Master’s Program
  • First year tuition (Domestic Students): $4,349.16/year
  • First year tuition (International Students): $7,640.70/year
PhD Program
  • PhD students will receive PhD tuition rebate for the first four years of their PhD program. Student fees are not rebated.
