Admission Requirements

General Notes

  • Apply online at www.law.ubc.ca/prospective/llb/apply.html
  • Online applications are preferable but paper forms can be downloaded and mailed
  • Three categories: Regular, Discretionary & First Nations Applicants
  • Discretionary: For those who may not meet regular admission requirements due to a variety of special factors (age, financial situation, disability, etc.)
  • First Nations: Admissions based on LSAT, academics, level of involvement with First Nations communities/organizations, and how the applicant intends to use their law degree in the interest of the First Nations people
  • A maximum of 10 part time students are admitted yearly on the basis of family, financial, or health reasons. Please consult the guide below.

Criteria

Required Classes

  • Require baccalaureate from approved university or have/will complete three years (min.90 credits) of their undergraduate education at an approved university
  • Full year course load of 30 credits must be completed by end of Spring semester (ie. end of April) if applying during the 2nd or 3rd year

GPA

  • Only averages of the applicant's first undergraduate degree (except discretionary applicants) are considered
  • Averages taken of courses completed at time of deadline, current year courses not considered except in the case of third year applicants

LSAT

  • Only the highest LSAT score submitted will be used (scores up to 5 years old)
  • Latest acceptable score is February of the admission year

Supporting Documents

  • Transcripts: must be sent in directly from all post secondary institutions attended
    • Students still taking classes must send a current transcript as well as a final one by June 30th
    • Foreign transcripts require a notarized English translation
  • Personal statement: must be submitted and may be used to determine admission eligibility or entrance scholarships
    • Maximum 750 words
    • Applicant should outline non academic achievements, community involvement, distinguishing features, etc.
    • Chance to explain circumstances that contributed to/detracted from the applicant's academics
  • Letters of reference are not required nor viewed by the admissions committee for regular applicants
    • In the case of Discretionary applicants, 2 letters of reference are required as well as any relevant documentation (medical report if applicable)
    • First Nations applicants must also provide 2 letters of reference
  • First Nations applicants must also apply proof of ancestry via a copy of their status card or a chart tracing their ancestry if one is unavailable

Deadlines

  • All materials including application fee of $80 must be submitted on or before February 1st
  • Final Transcripts must be submitted on or before June 30th

Tuition

  • $9,363 for Canadian residents (2007/2008)
  • Additional $785 in student fees and $500 admission deposit used towards tuition
  • Part time students pay $312.12 per credit
  • $585.91 per credit for International Students
  • $300 admission deposit
