Admission Requirements

General

  • The Human Genetics program is part of the department of Medicine so the admission procedures and criteria are the same as the Medicine program.
  • This program allows the student to understand human genetics including both theory & practical applications of human disease.
  • Student must take an advanced undergraduate course in genetics, a min of 2 graduate courses & a thesis-based research.
  • Apply online at http://www.mun.ca/sgs/
  • Encouraged to make contact such as email with a potential supervisor before or at the time of sending in a full application.
    • Supervisor has to provide student with supervision, space, equipment & research funds.

Academic Requirements

  • Candidates may submit an online application or submit a completed application forms to the School of Graduate Studies Office
  • A B.Sc degree showing at least 75% over the last 2 years of full time study.
    • Have completed a statistics undergraduate course.
    • From an institution recognized by the Senate.
  • Should obtain knowledge of the proposed field of study.
  • High degree of English literacy is needed too.

Financial Requirements

  • Fees pay at the time of registration.

  • Should register for funding such as Dean’s fellowship. If awarded, student will get $18,000/year. http://www.med.mun.ca/graduate/pages/fellowships.htm
  • Other ways of receiving external financial support are scholarships, research funding, & industry-sponsored funds.

Documents

  • 1 official transcript sent directly from the issuing school.
    • Certification of degree completion if not included in transcript.
    • English translations of all supporting documentation.
  • Official test scores directly from testing centers if required.
  • 3 letters of recommendation
    • Appraisals have to be an academic reference & at least 1 is a professional reference.
  • Foreign students need work permit & health insurance.
  • Social insurance card needed
  • $40 Application fee

Other

  • Area of research: cancer genetics, genetic epidemiology, gene mapping, medical genetics, birth defects, & population genetics.
  • Admission is decided by the school of Graduate studies on the recommendation from the Chair of Administrative committee.

Deadlines

  • May 31st:deadline for Fall enrollment of full time students.
  • July 31st: deadline for Fall enrollment of part time students.
  • October 31st: deadline for Winter enrollment of full time students.
  • November 30th: deadline for Winter enrollment of part time students.
