Admission Requirements

General

  • The Human Genetics program is part of the Department of Medicine so the admission procedures and criteria are the same as the Medicine program.
  • This program allows the student to understand human genetics including both theory & practical applications of human disease.
  • Student must take an advanced undergraduate course in genetics, a minimum of 2 graduate courses & a thesis-based research.
  • Applicants are strongly encouraged to make contact such as email with a potential supervisor before or at the time of sending in a full application.
    • Supervisor has to provide the student with supervision, space, equipment & research funds.
  • Students accepted in the Ph.D. program are required to complete a comprehensive examination

Academic Requirements

  • Applicants should hold a second class degree from a recognized University in a related field of study to be admitted into the Diploma or M.Sc. programs
  • Applicants must hold a Masters degree from a recognized University to be admitted into the PhD
  • Bachelor's degree with a minimum 75% average (or equivalent) from an institution recognized by the Senate.
  • Normally, students should have completed an undergraduate course in statistics.
  • Applicants with backgrounds in genetics, biochemistry, and biology are preferred.

  • Application fee: $60 for Canadian applicants and $120 for International applicants
  • Candidates may submit an online application or submit a completed application form to the School of Graduate Studies Office

  • 2 letters of appraisal
  • English Language Proficiency Test (where applicable)
    • TOEFL (Paper-based: minimum 550, Internet-based: minimum 80)
    • CanTEST (minimum 4.5 in Listening and Reading, 4.0 in Writing)
    • IELTS (minimum 6.5)
    • MELAB (minimum 85%)
    • CAEL (minimum 50-60 in each section)

  • Admission is decided by the school of Graduate studies on the recommendation from the Chair of Administrative committee.

Deadlines

  • Students are normally admitted to the Fall semester (September)
  • Recommended deadline for receipt of applications is March 1 for fall semester entry.
  • However, there are no set deadlines for Fall, Winter, and Spring admissions

Tuition 2018-2019

  • Master of Science in Medicine:
    • Newfoundland and Labrador Residents: $ 1905 to $ 2859 per year
    • Canadian students: $ 2478 to $ 3717 per year
    • International students: $ 3222 to $ 4833 per year
  • Doctoral Program:
    • Newfoundland and Labrador Residents: $ 2664 per year
    • Canadian students: $ 3462 per year
    • International students: $ 4497 per year

Note: Students must be registered for all three semesters of the year until the academic requirements for their degree have been fulfilled.
