Admission Requirements
General Notes
- The JD program requires 84 credits and is completed in three years.
- Students completing the joint degree program earn both a JD and master's degree in three years and one summer.
- The best way to apply is electronically via LSAC.
- Duke Law School requires that foreign transcripts also be submitted through the LSAC JD Credential Assembly Service (JD CAS).
Criteria
Required classes
- Must receive a bachelor’s degree prior to enrollment
GPA
No cut-off GPA is listed, but the entering class of 2007 had a median GPA of 3.74.
Law School Admission Test (LSAT)
- All applicants must take the Law School Admission Test (LSAT).
- Provide the dates you sat or will sit for the Law School Admission Test (LSAT).
- All applicants must take the LSAT no later than December 2007.
- All scores are reviewed; greater weight may be put on higher scores.
- If a score does not reflect your true ability, you may provide in an explanation in a separate attachment.

Supporting Documents
- Application Form completed and signed
- Personal statement - should include significant personal experiences beyond what is reflected in your transcripts and resume. Should also reflect your career and academic ambitions. No required length.
- Essay (optional).
- Duke-specific Essay: describe why you why you want to attend law school and why you choose to apply to Duke.
- Diversity Essay: reflect on how your life experiences and acquired perspectives would contribute to intellectual life at Duke.
- $70 application fee
- Two academic recommendation letter - should be written by professors who have personal knowledge of your academic ability and potential.
- Resumé - All honors and rewards should be included, as well as dates. No required length.

Admission
- Reviewing process starts in October
- Decisions made on a rolling basis; most admissions made before March 15
- All decisions finalized by April
Deadlines
- The application deadline for JD candidates is February 15, 2008.
- Applicants to the JD and Joint Degree programs can start submitting on September 1, 2007.
- Candidates are encouraged to apply as early as possible.
