Admission Requirements

General Notes

  • Applicants can apply electronically or on paper. No method is preferred.
  • Approximately 370 students enroll each year.
  • Entire academic record, including SAT scores and GPA, are considered along with the other personal and biographical information.
  • Columbia Law offers 3 degree programs: the J.D., a three year post-graduate law degree, the LL.M. (Masters of Law), a one-year program geared toward foreign-trained lawyers, and the J.S.D. (Doctor of the Science of Law), a doctorate degree requiring a prior law degree as well as the submission and oral defense of a dissertation.

Criteria

Required classes

  • Must hold or expect to hold a bachelor's degree prior to September of the entry year

GPA

  • There are no minimum cut-offs for GPA. However, the entering class of 2011 had a median GPA of 3.71 and a mean GPA of 3.69.

Law School Admission Test (LSAT)

  • All applicants must take the Law School Admission Test (LSAT).
  • There are no minimum cutoff scores for the LSAT.
  • The October LSAT score is the last score accepted for the Early Decision Plan.
  • The December LSAT score is the last score accepted for Regular Decision applicants.
  • An LSAT score is considered valid for no longer than 5 years. Regular decision candidates applying for admission to the 2008 entering class may submit LSAT scores earned on or after the June 2003 administration, but no later than the December 2007 administration.
  • If the LSAT is taken more than once, the entire LSAT testing history is evaluated when considering applications for admission.

Admissions

  • Regular Decision applicants should be notified by late April 2009.

Deadlines

  • Applicants may start applying to the J.D. program on September 1st.
  • Last LSAT date that meets Early Decision plan deadline: October 4th.
  • Early Decision Plan application deadline: November 15th.
  • Last LSAT date that meets Regular Admission deadline: December 6th.
  • Decision letters mailed to Early Decision Plan applicants in December 2008.
  • Regular Admission application deadline: February 15th, 2009.
  • Notification letters mailed to accepted applicants on a rolling basis from January to April 2008.

Tuition

  • Tuition for 2008-2009 is $44,124.
  • $1,550 for additional mandatory fees (health services, student activities, and University facilities).
  • $1,498 for hospital care insurance and standard medical coverage is required, unless students can show proof of comparable coverage.
  • Total estimated budget is $68,000 for a single student.
