Program Description

  • MA in Critical Human Geography, MSc in Physical Geography:
    • Two-year degree
    • Field research encouraged
    • Thesis (four courses required) and MRP (research paper; six courses required) options

    • Four to six year degree
    • Comprehensives completed in 5 semesters (less than two years)
    • Field Research encouraged, funding available

Admission Requirements

Academic Requirements

  • MA/MSc
    • Degree: 4-year degree or an Honours degree
    • GPA: Minimum average of a B (second class) standing
  • PhD
    • Degree: (usually) A master’s degree in geography
      • The Graduate Program in Geography will consider exceptional students with a master’s degree in other fields
    • GPA: Minimum average of a B+
    • Applicants should expect to have completed all of the master’s requirements before entering the program
  • Candidates are only admitted when an appropriate supervisor is identified (identify in statement of interest)

Funding

  • MA/MSc
    • Generally, Masters students are provided 1.0 (full) TAships (not guaranteed)
    • Besides basic funding, applicants with A- averages or better also receive a one year scholarship of $6000
    • Domestic, with full TA: $15,429
    • Domestic, no TA: $5,784
    • International, with TA: $12,818
    • International, no TA: $1,600
  • PhD
    • All PhD students are guaranteed a full TAship for 6 years
    • Applicants with high academic standards offered a one year scholarship of $3000
    • Domestic: $17,506
    • International: $15,372

External and internal scholarships, bursaries, and more are also offered.
Financial Support for international visa students is slightly different, and the number of funded positions for visa students is limited. Please contact the program for more information.
