Program Information

Admission Requirements

Degree and GPA Requirements

  • Students are encouraged to apply if they have an undergraduate and/or Master's degree in:
    • physics or applied physics
    • applied mathematics
    • astronomy
    • other discipline involving upper-level undergraduate and/or graduate-level courses in the fundamental areas of physics
  • MSc in either physics or astronomy
    • 4-year BSc degree (or equivalent) in physics, astronomy, or engineering with a 70% (B) average over the third and fourth years
  • PhD in either physics or astronomy
    • MSc degree (or equivalent) in physics, astronomy, or engineering with a 70% (B) average over all courses

Supporting Documents

  • GRE-Physics examination is strongly encouraged for students who are:
    • international
    • domestic with degrees from offshore universities
    • domestic with engineering degrees
  • Non-native English speakers:
    • Option 1: TOEFL - minimum score of 90 (Western's TOEFL ID is 0984)
    • Option 2: IELTS - minimum score of 7 out of 9

Timeline (2019-2020)

  • Domestic Students:
    • January 15 is recommended for September admission to allow time for scholarship applications
    • applications received after January 15 will be accommodated on a first-come, first-served basis
  • International Students: March 1 for September admission
