Admission Requirements

General

  • The following requirements must be met in the order listed:
1. Meet the minimum requirements for admission to UBC
2. Acceptance by a supervisor
3. Application to the Faculty of Graduate studies and acceptance by the Cell and Developmental Biology Graduate Studies Committee

Academic Requirements

MSc

  • Must have a bachelor’s degree or equivalent
    • 12 credits of 3rd and 4th year courses with at least an A- (UBC 80%) in subjects related the intended field of study
    • OR, overall average of B+ (UBC 76%) in 3rd and 4th year courses deemed as prequisities for the master’s program
  • Admission requirements for international students are available on a country-by-country basis here
  • English language proficiency (TOEFL)
  • Sufficient academic background to carry out graduate work

PhD

  • Direct admission may be given to applicants with a bachelor’s degree with an overall UBC “A” grade (80% or higher, McGill’s A- and A) with advanced research ability.
  • OR, Bachelor’s degree with 1 year of study in a Master’s degree with 9 credits at 500-level coursework or above (must be 80% or higher). Clear evidence of research ability or potential is also required.
  • OR, Master’s degree with evidence of research ability/potential and overall B+ (76%) average or above.
  • OR, have suffiecient preparatory academic background to carry out graduate work in the chosen field

Tuition 2018-2019

  • International - $8,270.55 per year
  • Domestic - $4,707.66 per year
  • Fees - ~$850 per year

Financial Support Minimum level of financial support (stipend) from research supervisors is $22,000/year for at least two years (M.Sc.) or 4 years (Ph.D.) All students must apply for as many scholarships and/or awards for which s(he) is eligible.
With a scholarship of 8,000+/year, a $3,000 top up per year will be added to the minimum funding level. With a scholarship of $16,000+/year, a $6,000 top up/year will be added.
All full-time international students receive the International Tuition Award unless they are a recipient of external scholarships or funding for their tuition. An application is not necessary.
