Program Information

  • Microbes, Immunity, and Inflammation
  • Master of Science (MSc) – 2 years in length full time
    • Program consists of course work, research and a thesis with defence
  • Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) – 4 years in length full time
    • Program consists of research and a thesis with defence, although there may be some course work
  • Areas of Research:
    • Virology and cell biology
    • Host immune responses
    • Bacterial pathogenesis and physiology
  • Program is only available in English, full-time

Admission Requirements

Course and Degree Requirements

Master’s Program
  • Degree: An Honours undergraduate degree in a similar type of program or a degree in Medicine (MD)
PhD Program
  • Degree: A Master’s degree in Microbiology, Biology or any related life sciences program
    • Students with an overall grade of “A” may be able to enter the PhD program directly provided that they obtained an Honours undergraduate degree and exhibit strong research potential.
    • Some students may be able to fast-track their Master’s by only completing it in 1 to 1.5 years in which they are awarded a “Mini Masters”.

  • Minimum: Overall 75% (grade “B+” or GPA of about 3.3 out of 4) during the last two years of undergraduate study

  • 2 official transcripts from universities attended In English or French (otherwise they must be translated by the university issuing the transcript).
  • 2 letters of recommendation from professors

Other Requirements

  • Students before entering their first year (and even before submitting an application) should consult with University staff members to discover research projects that are happening in the Department and must select a potential thesis advisor.
  • Proof of English proficiency if the applicant’s mother tongue is not English. The applicant will to complete either of the following tests and need the following minimum scores and have them sent to the School of Graduate Studies:
    • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL):
      • Paper-based test: 600
      • Computer-based test: 250
      • Internet-based test: 88 total with a minimum of 24 in writing, 22 in speaking, 22 in reading and 20 in listening
    • Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB): 80
    • International English Language Testing System: 7
  • In addition to completing one of the above tests, international applicants are required to do a diagnostic assessment for their English oral skills in order to become a Teaching Assistant. If this requirement is not passed, the student must complete the course ‘’English Language Communication Skills for Teaching Purposes’’.

Timeline

  • March 1: Deadline to submit all application documents for internal funding
    • Applications should be submitted early though since there is a preference to admit early applications.
  • March – July: Offers of admission are sent out.
  • August 1: Deadline to submit the minimum registration payment of $ 1,000 for Domestic students and $ 3,000 for International students.

Tuition 2018-2019

  • Fees are to be paid in three 4-month terms (as opposed to a yearly tuition fee).

Domestic Students

  • $7,610.92/year full time study

International Students

  • $14,747.92/year full time study

Funding

Master’s Program
  • Minimum: $ 19,000/year for the first 2 years of study
PhD Program
  • Minimum: $ 21,000/year for the first 4 years of study
    • More money may be obtained through various scholarships and working as a Teaching Assistant.
