Program Information

  • Master of Science (MSc) – 2 years in length
  • Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) – between 3-5 years in length
  • Areas of research:
    • Molecular and cellular biology of microorganisms and the immune system

Admission Requirements

Course and Degree Requirements

Master’s Program
  • Degree: Minimum Honours undergraduate degree from an accredited university in Microbiology or Immunology or another biological sciences program. Those with either professional degrees MD, DDS or DVM degree may also apply.
  • Required Courses
PhD Program
  • Degree: Minimum Masters program.

Master’s Program
  • Minimum: 70% (grade “B”) during the last 2 years of study in the Bachelor’s program
    • Students need a minimum of 75% in 10 of their courses
PhD Program
  • Minimum: 70% (grade “B”) obtained during the Masters program

Supporting Documents

  • Application form.
  • Letter of intent of about 1-2 pages describing your academic interest and scientific background, your as well as the motivation to continue doing graduate studies in Microbiology and Immunology.
  • C.V. (curriculum vitae)
  • Official transcripts from each undergraduate and graduate institution attended in a seal envelope issued by the institution. International students’ transcripts require an English translation.
  • Two letters of recommendation written by members of the applicant’s Faculty that have some knowledge of their scientific background.
    • Letters coming from people other than from the university’s Faculties cannot be used.
  • Possible interviews when applicants are choosing a potential research supervisor.

Other Requirements

  • Students before entering their first year (and even before submitting an application) should consult with University staff members to discover research projects that are happening in the Department and must select a potential thesis advisor.
  • Proof of English proficiency if the applicant’s mother tongue is not English. The applicant will need the following minimum scores (testing agency must directly send scores to the College of Biological Science (CBS) Graduate Admissions Secretary):
    • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL):
      • Paper-based test: 550
      • Computer-based test: 213
      • Internet-based test: 86 total with a minimum of 20 on each skill area (reading, writing, listening and speaking)
    • Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB): 80 at leats in each section, but must have an 85 overall
    • International English Language Testing System: 6
    • Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) Assessment: 60
