Program Information

  • Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD)
  • 4 years in length
  • Concurrent degrees are also available - PharmD/PhD, PharmD/MS, or PharmD/Physician Assistant. For more information, click here
  • Number of applications: approximately 400 each year
  • Class size: approximately 100
  • Preference is given to residents of Washington

Admission Requirements

Course and Degree Requirements

  • Degree: Bachelor's degree not required, but recommended
  • Required Courses - survey courses are not accepted.
    • Calculus I (3-4 credits = one semester)
    • Statistics (3-4 credits = one semester)
    • General Chemistry including lab (8 credits = 2 semesters)
    • Organic Chemistry including lab (8 credits = 2 semesters)
    • General Biology including lab (8 credits = 2 semesters )
    • Biochemistry (4-10 credits depending on course description of current institute)
    • Microbiology including lab (4 credits = one semester)
    • Microeconomics (3 credits = one semester)
    • English composition (6-8 credits)
      • English composition requirements may be fulfilled by taking two English composition courses or one English composition course and two Writing-Intensive course
    • Interpersonal Communications/Public Speaking (3 credits = one semester)
    • Humanities Electives (3 credits = one semester)
      • Examples: Art and Art History, Speech Communications, Dance, Theatre, Music, Foreign languages)
    • Social Science Electives (3 credits = one semester)
      • Examples: Anthropology, History, Psychology, Philosophy, Sociology

GPA

  • Cumulative GPA
    • Minimum: 2.9 (4.0 scale)
    • Average accepted GPA: between 3.44 - 3.60
    • (Cumulative GPA is calculated using grades from all colleges or universities attended or from which credit is received.
  • Prerequisite GPA
    • Minimum: 2.9
    • Average accepted prerequisite GPA: between 3.44-3.60]
    • All grades for repeated courses will be considered.

PCAT

  • Minimum scores: 60th percentile or greater in Chemistry and 25th precentile or greater in other areas of the PCAT
  • Applicants must take the PCAT within two years prior to admission to the program
  • The School of Pharmacy will not accept any other admission test (MCAT, GRE, etc...)
  • PCAT scores must be sent to PharmCAS, not the University of Washington.

  • Application can be found at the PharmCAS website
  • The School of Pharmacy only accepts/requires two recommendations, one from an academic source and one from a professional source.
    • Academic sources include: professors or teaching assistants who have directly interacted with the applicant at a university level, university/college academic advisors
    • Professional sources include: employers or volunteer organization personnel with whom the applicant has directly worked
  • Official, sealed transcript from all colleges, universities, etc. attended or from which credit was awarded.
  • PCAT scores must be sent to PharmCAS directly.

Interviews

  • Interviews (by invitation only) usually start in late January/early February and run through April.
  • Interviews (roughly 30-45 minutes) take place in Seattle.
  • Applicants will be interviewed by three members of the UW School of Pharmacy PharmD Admissions Committee.

  • Mid-June, 2012: Applications become available on PharmCAS (Pharmacy College Application Service)
  • January 7, 2013: PharmCAS Application deadline and School of Pharmacy Supplemental Application deadline
  • Late January to April: Interviews are held
  • February - early May: Decisions made.

  • Additional fees include Health Sciences Fee of $110 per year, and course or lab fees ($20-$60 per lab/course)
