Program Information

  • M.A. or M.Sc.
    • Encouraged to complete in 2 years (5-year maximum)
    • Minimum of 12 credit units of graduate coursework, attendance of a graduate seminar, fulfillment of a residency requirement of 1 year, submission and defense of a thesis based on original research

    • Encouraged to complete in 3 years (6-year maximum)
    • Minimum of 6 credit units of graduate coursework, attendance of a graduate seminar, fulfillment of a residency requirement of 2 years, completion of a comprehensive exam, and submission and defense of a thesis based on original research
    • May also be required to write a qualifying exam -- may be waived if the committee feels that the student’s background warrants it

Academic Requirements

  • MSc
    • Degree: Equivalent of a University of Saskatchewan 4-year BA or BSc degree
    • GPA: average of at least 70% over the last 2 years of undergraduate program
  • PhD
    • Degree: M.A. or M.Sc. degree in Geography or a cognate subject
    • GPA: average of at least 70% over the last 2 years of graduate program

Supporting Documents

  • Online application (Graduate (B) Fall term start - September)
  • Three confidential letters of recommendation
    • 2 of your referees must be persons under whom you've studied
    • 1 referee may be either a person whom you have worked professionally under, or under whom you've studied
  • Transcripts (Preliminary Statement of Marks)
    • unofficial PDF copies of your academic transcript(s) from each post-secondary institution attended (including grading key/legend)
  • Proof of English language proficiency may be required for international applicants and for applicants whose first language is not English
  • Application fee of $90
  • Statement of research interests

  • Application deadline for September entry: February 15th
    • Applications submitted after may still be approved, however, opportunities for funding will be fewer
  • Students who apply by December 2nd will have the greatest opportunity for scholarships

  • Canadian students: $1379.00/ term = $4137.00 total per academic year
  • International students: $2178.82/ term = $6536.46 total per academic year

Funding

  • MSc
    • USask Graduate Scholarships, Department of Geography and Planning Scholarships with Service, or Graduate Teaching Fellowships are granted annually
      • The present value of these awards is ~$15,500/year
      • To be eligible for scholarship funding, students must obtain at least 80% in the last two years of undergraduate study
    • The College of Graduate Studies and Research offers a Dean’s Scholarship ($18,000)
      • Must have a minimum 85% average in each of the last 2 years of study
    • Graduate students are also encouraged to apply for external scholarships & awards
  • PhD
    • USask Graduate Scholarships, Department of Geography and Planning Scholarships with Service, or Graduate Teaching Fellowships are granted annually
