Program Information

• Microbiology & Immunology
• Master of Science (MSc) – 1 year minimum full-time (3 sessions)
  • Program consists of course work, research and a thesis with defence
• Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) – 6 sessions minimum from a Master’s degree or 9 session minimum from an Honours undergraduate degree
  • Program consists of course work, research and a thesis with defence
• Areas of Research:
  • Viral and bacterial pathogenesis
  • Vaccine development
  • Environmental virology
  • Cellular immunology
  • Tumour biology
• Program size: approximately 190 students (including the Biochemistry program)
• Program is only available in English and full-time although the thesis may be defended in either English or French.

Admission Requirements

Course and Degree Requirements

Master’s Program

• Degree: An Honours undergraduate degree in a similar type of program. Applicants with a degree in Medicine (MD), Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or some other professional degree may apply only if they have completed two years of undergraduate studies prior to their professional program or have done some research.

PhD Program

• Degree: A Master’s degree completed with a thesis in Microbiology, Immunology or a similar subject
  • Some students may be able to fast-track their Master’s by only completing it in 1 to 1.5 years in which they are awarded a “Mini Masters”.

Both MSc and PhD Programs

• The program may only be completed full-time and students may not be working more than 10 hours for work other than their thesis.

GPA

Master’s Program

• Minimum: Grade of “B+” overall (about a GPA of 3.3 out of 4)

PhD Program

• Minimum: Grade of “B+” overall (about a GPA of 3.3 out of 4)
  • If the student does not take many Master’s courses, two years of undergraduate studies may be included in the GPA calculation.

• Two letters of recommendation from professors who are able to assess the applicant’s academic and/or research abilities.
• $ 100.00 application fee
• The following documents are not required, but will enhance the student’s application profile:
  • A Curriculum Vitae (C.V.)
  • Letter of intent
  • Scholarship information
  • Abstracts from research in the applicant’s last year of undergraduate study or Master’s thesis

Other Requirements

• Students before entering their first year (and even before submitting an application) should consult with University staff members to discover research projects that are happening in the Department and must select a potential thesis advisor.
• Proof of English proficiency if the applicant did not complete their studies in Canada or an English speaking country. The applicant will to complete either of the following tests and need the following minimum scores and have them sent to the School of Graduate Studies:
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL):
    • Paper-based test: 600
    • Computer-based test: 250
    • Internet-based test: 100
      • TOEFL scores require a 4.5 score in the Test of Written English (TWE)
  • Similar scores in other tests of English proficiency
  • Completion of a degree done in English
  • Long-lasting residence as well job employment done in English

• Canadian students:
  • August 1: Application deadline to start the program during the Fall semester

  • April 1: Application deadline to start the program during the Summer semester
• International students:
  • February 15: Application deadline to start the program during the Fall semester
  • May 1: Application deadline to start the program during the Winter semester

• Fees are to be paid in three 4-month terms (as opposed to a yearly tuition fee).

Funding

Master’s Program

• Minimum for Canadian students and Permanent residents: $ 45,000 for the duration of the whole program
• Minimum for International students: $ 15,000/year,

PhD Program

• Minimum for Canadian students and Permanent residents: $ 96,000 for the duration of the whole program
• Minimum for International students: $ 18,000/year
  • More funding may be obtained through various scholarships such as the Dean’s Scholarship, Travel Grants, etc. and working as a Teaching Assistant.
