Program Information

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM)
    • 4 years in length
    • first two years focus on basic and applied science core courses
    • clinical experience during their final years
  • Total 120 seats of 105 Ontario Canadians and 15 non-Canadians

Admission Requirements

Course and Degree Requirements

  • Degree: a minimum of two years of full-time studies (15 credits each semester) in a Bachelor's degree program
  • Required Courses to be completed by Dec. 31 of the year prior to the application
    • 2 Biological Sciences (3 credits each)
    • Cell Biology (3 credits)
    • Genetics (3 credits)
    • Biochemistry (3 credits)
    • Statistics (3 credits)
    • 2 Humanities/Social Sciences (3 credits each)
  • Prerequisite courses taken at an institution other than the University of Guelph can be submitted for review and approval prior to the application

GPA and MCAT

  • Minimum GPA from the last 2 full-time semesters: 3.3 (75%)
  • Minimum average from the 8 prerequisite courses: 75%
  • 40:40:20 Calculation
    • 40% is the average of courses completed in the last two acceptable full-time semesters
    • 40% is the average of 8 prerequisite courses
    • 20% is the MCAT score
  • Top 200 candidates will be chosen for further selection
  • MCAT scores is calculated by taking the numerical scores and converting writing section grades to numerical grades (J=1/11, T=11/11)
  • Takes the best MCAT score

Non-academic requirements

  • Veterinary experience
    • Voluntary or paid done with at a supervising veterinarian
    • Keep a log of hours completed
  • Animal experience
    • Working with livestock, breeding/showing various species, in a pet store, equestrian activities and any other animal related hobby/experience without full presence/supervision of a veterinarian
  • Extracurricular/employment
    • Activities requiring communication, interpersonal and organizational skills
    • Do not involve animal contact

Required Documents

  • Apply using the OUAC 105D form
  • Official transcripts of their university records and MCAT scores
  • Background Information Form (BIF)
    • Present your veterinary experience, animal experience, extracurricular activities and employment
    • 3 essay questions
  • 3 Referee assessment forms (2 referees must be veterinarians)
    • Applying graduate students must submit an additional form (the 2 other referees must be familiar with your performance as a graduate student)
