Admission Requirements
General
- Before applying, applicants should arrange to meet with potential advisors, inquire into research funding potential, share research interests, etc.
- Online application available at: www.uoguelph.ca/graduatestudies/
Academic Requirements
- BSc. Honours degree (does not have to be in Microbiology)
- Minimum B average (73%) during last two years of undergraduate study
- Possible to transfer from MSc to PhD if applicant has excellent academic standing and shown promise in research during the first 3 semesters of MSc
- In exceptional situations, applicants with an A- average (80%) in a BSc program who have demonstrated great research ability may be directly admitted to the PhD program
Financial Requirements
- Annual sub-total for full-time domestic students: $6,491.00 (includes tuition and compulsory fees such as Dental Plan, Drug Plan, Athletic fee, etc.)
- Estimated annual cost of living for domestic students: $18,091.00 to $23,066.00 (includes sub-total from above and cost of living expenses)
Documents
- Hard copy of the online application, to be mailed to the department’s Admissions Secretary
- Statement of Research Interest
- 2 letters of reference
- 1 certified copy of each previous undergraduate and/or graduate transcript
- Application fee of $85
- Proof of English Proficiency (if not a Canadian Citizen): TOEFL, IELTS, MELAB, CAEL scores are accepted

- 5 major areas of interest in the department: Microbial Physiology and Structures, Pathogenesis and Immunity, Virology, Biotechnology, Biochemistry
Deadlines
- Applications are accepted all year
- Semesters begin in January, May, and September
- Processing and consideration time for applications takes around 6 weeks
- Applications should be submitted approx. 2 months prior to the semester of desired entry
