Course and Degree Requirements

Master's Program

  • Degree: Four-year Honours undergraduate science degree (or its equivalent) in a relevant discipline
  • GPA: “B” (75%) average or higher during the last two years of full-time study
    • In exceptional circumstances, students with a “B-minus” average (70%) will be considered provided there is strong supporting evidence of research aptitude and potential

Supporting Documents

  • Application through Ontario Universities Application Centre (OUAC) portal
  • Other components of application must be uploaded within two months after submission of application:
    • Transcript(s)
    • Graduate certificate(s)
    • Grading scale(s)
    • Language test results
    • Assessment forms
    • A statement of interest
    • Name of the faculty advisor

Other Requirements

  • Recommended that potential graduate students contact faculty members who share their research interests BEFORE submitting an official application form
    • A list of graduate faculty in the department is available here
      • Include in your correspondence the following:
        • Courses completed (plus the mark received)
        • Relevant research and/or work experience, and with whom
        • Whether you have a scholarship
        • 2-3 academic or research references
        • The reason for contacting our particular faculty



Course and Degree Requirements

  • Master’s Program
    • Degree: An Honours Bachelor’s degree in a related field of study or an equivalent degree.
  • PhD Program
    • Degree: A Master’s degree in a related field of study, although students with strong research potential may request to transfer into the PhD program between the end of the second semester and the end of the fourth semester. The request must be sent to the Molecular and Cell Biology (MCB) Graduate Program Coordinator. Under exceptional promise, a student may apply directly from an Honours undergraduate program.

GPA

  • Master’s Program
    • Minimum: 75% (grade “B”) during the last 2 years of study
      • An average of 70% (grade “B-”) may be acceptable, under special circumstances, provided that the student demonstrates great research potential.
  • PhD Program
    • Minimum: 80% (grade “A-”).
      • Students who transfer directly from an Honours Bachelor’s degree require an A- average during their last 2 years of study and demonstrate research aptitude.

Supporting Documents

  • Ontario Universities Application Centre (OUAC) application form; all components of the application must be submitted within 2 months of applying through OUAC
  • Statement (one page) describing research interests and goals during graduate school
  • Official transcripts from each undergraduate and graduate institution attended in a seal envelope issued by the institution. International students’ transcripts require a notarized English translation.
  • Two or three letters of recommendation (“Assessment forms”)

Other Requirements

  • Students before entering their first year (and even before submitting an application) should consult with University staff members to discover research projects that are happening in the Department and must select a potential thesis advisor.
  • It is also recommended to include the following when contacting a potential supervisor:
    • Courses completed with the marks obtained
    • Pertinent research/work experience and with whom
    • Whether you possess a scholarship
    • 2 or 3 academic/research references
    • A reason for getting in touch with the Faculty member
  • Proof of English proficiency if the applicant’s mother tongue is not English. The applicant will need the following minimum scores (testing agency must directly send scores to the College of Biological Science (CBS) Graduate Admissions Secretary):
    • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL):
      • Paper-based test: 550
      • Internet-based test: 89 total with a minimum of 21 on each skill area (reading, writing, listening and speaking)
    • Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB): 85
    • International English Language Testing System: 6.5
    • Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) Assessment: 60
    • University of Guelph English Language Certificate: Advanced Level

Timeline

Admission may be granted for entry in September, January or May. Completed applications should be uploaded at least one full semester (four months) before the expected date of admission (at least eight months for international students)

Tuition 2012-2013

  • Canadian Student
    • First Year Tuition (full-time): $ 6,969
    • Compulsory Fees (dental & drug plan, athletic fees, bus pass, etc.): $ 1,305
  • International Student
    • First Year Tuition (full-time): $ 16,341
    • Other Fees (dental & drug plan, athletic fees, bus pass, etc.): $ 1,305
    • Health Insurance (UHIP) (based on single coverage: $ 756
  • Aboriginal/Native American students from the U.S. can be exempt from paying International fees if they identify themselves as Aboriginal or Native American on their application form.
  • All Students
