Program Information

  • Master of Science (MSc)
    • Three options possible with different course to research ratios
      • 12 credit MSc thesis and 18 credits of course work
      • 3 credit MSc essay and 27 credits of course work
      • 6 credit MSc thesis and 27 credits of course work

  • Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
    • The program has 3 main components
      • Satisfying the Comprehensive Course Requirement
      • Passing a Thesis Proposal Oral Examination
      • Completing the Research Program

Course and Degree Requirements

  • Applicants to the Master's Program should hold a degree academically equivalent to a UBC four-year Bachelor's degree
  • Sufficient undergraduate background in the intended field of specialty

Other Requirements

  • TOEFL is required if the applicant’s degree is not from Canada, USA, UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, or Kenya. The test must have been taken within 2 years from the intended matriculation date and the following minimum scores must be achieved:
    • Paper-based test: 600
    • Computer-based test: 250
    • Internet-based test: 100
