Program Information

  • Medical Microbiology & Immunology
  • Master of Science (MSc)
    • 3-4 years in length
  • Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
    • 5-6 years in length
    • Applicants do not need to have a Master’s degree to enter the PhD program
  • Areas of research:

    • Immunology
    • Macromolecular Crystallography
    • Mycology
    • Virology

Course and Degree Requirements

  • Degree: An undergraduate or graduate degree. Students should have an honours grade in their undergraduate degree.
  • The University considers any research experience done in a lab during the application process.

  • Minimum: 3.3 out of 4.0 during last two years of study

  • Candidates who are not from Canada or the U.S. must complete the GRE.
  • Minimum Quantitative score: 75th percentile
  • Minimum Verbal score: 75th percentile
  • Minimum Analytical score: 75th percentile

Other Requirements

  • Proof of English proficiency if the applicant’s degree is not from an institution in which the language of instruction is not English. The applicant will need the following minimum scores:
    • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL):
      • Paper-based test: 600
      • Internet-based test: 96 total with a minimum of 20 on each skill area
      • Computer-based test: 232
    • Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB): 90
    • International English Language Testing System: 6.5 overall with a minimum of 5 on each band
    • Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) Assessment: 60 overall with a minimum of 60 on each subtest
  • Students who wish to enter laboratory rotations within their first year should consult with University staff members before starting their first term to discover research projects that are happening in the Department.

Timeline

  • There are no deadlines for applications, whether it is for the Fall or Winter semester, or for Canadian and International students. Instead, the University proceeds on rolling admissions.

Funding

Each supervisor is responsible for finding financial support for the graduate student until completion of the degree unless the student is not making normal progress towards completing his/her degree (eg. not maintaining the minimum grade average, unsatisfactory performance at two consecutive supervisory meetings, or failure to pass the candidacy exam).

  • Minimum (Canadian student): $ 19,000/year
  • Minimum (International student): $ 19,000/year
