Program Information

  • Biomedical Sciences
  • Master of Science (MSc)
    • Program length: Minimum 3 semesters (1 year) and a maximum of 6 semesters (two years) for full-time students and 9 semesters (3 years) for part-time students. From this time period, 2 consecutive semesters must be done full time at the University or at an affiliated research lab.
    • There are also different program options to choose from:
      • Clinical Research
      • Psychiatric Sciences
      • Musculoskeletal
      • Rehabilitation
      • Medical Assurance and Expertise in Health Sciences
      • Science of Aging
  • Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
    • Program length: Minimum 6 semesters (2 years) and a maximum of 15 semesters (5 years) for full-time students and 18 semesters (6 years) for part-time students. From this time period, 2 consecutive semesters must be done full time at the University or at an affiliated research lab.
    • There are also different program options to choose from:
      • Neuropsychology
      • Bioethics
      • Rehabilitation
      • Orthophony or Audiology
      • Medical Assurance and Expertise in Health Sciences
      • Science of Aging
      • Musculoskeletal
  • Applicants currently undergoing an MD, pre-MD or post-MD degree wishing to enter the program can opt to complete the Medicine-Research program (MSc/MD or PhD/MD).

Admission Requirements

Course and Degree Requirements

Master’s Program
  • Degree: A Bachelor’s degree or have an equivalent degree.
  • If doing one of the options mentioned above in the section Program Information, the following is required:
    • Clinical Research: Either a Doctorate in Medicine (MD), Dentistry (DMD), Veterinary Medicine (DMV), a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate program option or an equivalent degree.
    • Psychiatric Sciences: Either a Doctorate in Medicine (MD), Dentistry (DMD), Veterinary Medicine (DMV), a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate program option or an equivalent degree.
    • Musculoskeletal: Either a Doctorate in Medicine (MD), Dentistry (DMD), Veterinary Medicine (DMV), a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate program option or an equivalent degree.
    • Rehabilitation: A Bachelor’s degree in Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy or in a discipline related to rehabilitation.
    • Medical Assurance and Expertise in Health Sciences: A university diploma that allows you to do a profession in the health domain or have a LL.B. degree in Law or another other equivalent degree.
    • Science of Aging: Either a Doctorate in Medicine (MD), Dentistry (DMD), Veterinary Medicine (DMV), a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate program option or an equivalent degree.
PhD Program
  • Degree: A Master’s degree in Bioinformatics or an equivalent degree.
  • If doing one of the options mentioned above in the section Program Information, the following is required:
    • Neuropsychology: A Master’s degree in Biomedical Sciences or an equivalent degree.
    • Bioethics: A Master’s degree in Biomedical Sciences.
      • Required courses: 21 credits of courses in Bioethics
    • Rehabilitation: A Master’s degree in a domain related to rehabilitation
    • Orthophony or Audiology: A Master’s degree or an equivalent degree related to ortophony or audiology
    • Psychiatric Sciences: A Master’s degree in Biomedical Sciences or an equivalent degree
    • Medical Assurance and Expertise in Health Sciences: A Master’s degree giving the applicant the right to do a profession in the health domain or in law, or have another degree deemed equivalent
    • Science of Aging: A Master’s degree in Biomedical Sciences in the Science of Aging option. Those who do not possess this requirement may continue in the program with additional courses.
    • Musculoskeletal: A Master’s degree in a related domain, or have an equivalent degree.
MSc/MD or PhD/MD Program
  • Degree: A Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent degree and be enrolled in the first year in Medicine or pre-Med.

  • Minimum: 3.0 out of 4.3 (or the equivalent) in the Bachelor’s program
PhD Program
  • Minimum: 3.3 out of 4.3 (or the equivalent) in the Master’s program

  • Minumum: 3.0 out of 4.3 (or the equivalent) in the Bachelor’s program

Supporting Documents

  • Application form
  • Copy of the applicant’s transcript with final marks included
  • Bachelor’s diploma (to enter the Master’s program) or Master’s diploma (to enter the PhD program)
  • Birth certificate (or an official document that indicates the applicant’s name, date of birth, sex, cityand country of birth and the full names of his/her parents).
  • Letter of intent that explains career objectives, interests of the candidate and reasons why the applicant wishes to pursue graduate studies.
  • C.V.
  • Letter of acceptance from a research supervisor.
  • Research project description between 200 – 500 words describing the outline of your proposed research.

Interview

An interview may be required upon demand by the Admissions Committee for applicants applying to the MSc or PhD in the Musculoskeletal option. For more information, click here (MSc) or here (PhD)

Other Requirements

  • Good knowledge of French and English.
    • A French Test may be required for those whose mother tongue is not French or whose past studies were not completed in French.
    • Students in the PhD program are required to possess sufficient English knowledge before moving on past their 2nd year.
  • Students before entering their first year should consult with University staff members to discover research projects that are happening in the Department and must select a potential thesis advisor and have their advisor selected by the end of their first semester.
  • French applicants (from France): A copy of the applicant’s passport.

    • Applicants with Permanent Resident status: A copy of the IMM1000 or IMM5292 (Emploi et Immigration Canada) forms
    • Applicants with a Study Permit: A copy of your study permit, health insurance and the Certificat d’acceptation du Québec if taking more than 12 credits.

    • Aboriginal applicants living in Quebec, one of the following is required:
  1. A letter signed by an authority of the Conseil de bande stating that you or your parents are living on the reserve in Quebec
  2. An official list of the members of the Conseil de bande that includes your name
  3. For beneficiaries of the Baie James Convention, a card given out by the Makivik Society or the Grand Council of the Crees that shows your beneficiary number.
  • If you are unable to fulfill one of the 3 ways mentioned above, you may do one of the following:
  1. Present a Certificat de Sélection du Québec (CSQ) or an official letter from the Ministère des Relations avec les citoyens et de l’immigration du Québec stating that you hold a CSQ
  2. Filling out the following document.
